Second Half Rally Not Enough for Women's Basketball at Charleston Southern

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - A second half rally was not enough for UNC Asheville Women's Basketball at Charleston Southern on Saturday (Jan. 25), as the Bulldogs fell 57-52.

The teams traded buckets through an even first quarter that saw Charleston Southern leading 14-13 after 10 minutes.

Charleston Southern opened the second quarter on a 9-2 run through four minutes and change, ultimately winning the quarter 17-9 to take a 31-22 lead to the break.

Asheville got back within one in the first few minutes of the second half, eventually putting together a few scoring possessions to take the lead with three minutes to play in the third quarter. Asheville took a brief lead late in the quarter, but despite outscoring Charleston Southern 17-12 in the period trailed 43-39 headed to the fourth. Asheville opened the quarter on an 8-0 run, but Charleston Southern closed the quarter on a 7-2 run through the final 2:13 of the period.

The Bulldogs eventually got back to within three with two minutes to play, before Charleston Southern scored four of the game's final six points from the free throw line to bring the game to its final score.

Asheville shot 35 percent (21-60) from the field, just 24 percent (6-25) from three-point range and 66.7 percent (4-6) from the foul line in the game. Asheville scored 16 points off turnovers, 24 points in the paint and outscored Charleston Southern 17-15 off the bench in the contest. Abigail Wilson led the Bulldogs with 13 points and was one of three Bulldogs to finish in double figures, with Taylor Wilkins and Deborah Orianegbena each adding 11 points in the game. Wilkins has now scored in double figures in back-to-back games for the first time in her Bulldog career, while Orianegbena set a new career-high in her first double-digit scoring game. Bailey and Alana Swift each had six points in the game, while McCaughan added five. Wilson led the effort on the glass with seven rebounds, while Jazlyn Ware and Orianegbena each had six rebounds in the game. Wilkins and Swift each had two rebounds in the game, while McCaughan also had one. McCaughan dished out a team-high six assists in the game, while Bailey had three and Wilson, Wilkins and Swift each had two. McCaughan also led the team with five steals in the game, while Wilson had two and Orianegbena also had one. Wilkins and Ware each registered blocks for Asheville in the game.
