Seven Podium Finishes and Six School Records Highlight Asheville’s Final Day of Big South Championships

HIGH POINT, N.C. - The UNC Asheville track and field team closed out the 2024 Big South Outdoor Conference Championships with seven podium finishes and six school records on Wednesday. Both the men's and women's teams finished in fourth overall with 91 points (men) and 78 points (women).

SCHOLAR AWARDS

Dylan Major and Brianna Moore were each named Scholar-Athlete of the Year to highlight Asheville's success off the track. Major and Moore are both seniors, with Major earning degrees in Atmospheric Science & Computer Science and Moore earning a degree in Health and Wellness Promotion. 

PODIUM FINISHES & SCHOOL RECORDS

DaMarr Harvey and Zac Weas led the Bulldogs as both secured gold medals, with Harvey winning the 200m and Weas winning the 110m hurdles. 

Harvey won the 200m and set a new school record with a time of 20.71. Weas won the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.24. 

Harvey also secured bronze in the 100m and set a new school record with a time of 10.33. Weas and Harvey were both a part of the 4x100 relay team to secure silver and set a new school record with a time of 40.48. They were joined by Jalen Anderson and Braelin June

The 4x100 relay team of Elyse Myles, Francesca Cergol, Brianna Moore, and Mallory Haney wrote their names in the record book as they set a new relay record at 47.17. The squad finished the race in fourth place. Alison Graf joined Myles, Moore, and Haney in the 4x400 relay, and the team earned a third-place finish with a time of 3:48.68, setting a new school record. 

Graf finished third in the women's 800m with a time of 2:09.97. Her time was a personal best, and she is now the No. 2 in the program's history in the 800m. 

Moore continued her successful week with a second-place finish in the javelin, throwing 42.32m for her fourth podium appearance. 

In the 1500m, Alex Haines secured the final school record of the day, finishing fourth with a time of 3:49.99. Brandon Trollip set the previous record for the men's 1500m in 1998 at 3:51.14. 

WEDNESDAY TRACK FINALS

Jalen Anderson competed in both the men's 100m and 200m events. He finished sixth in the 100 m with a time of 10.52 (PB) and fourth in the 200m with a time of 20.99. 

Weas and Adam Graham competed in the 400m hurdles. Weas finished fourth with a personal best time of 53.86, and Adam Graham took eighth place at 57.12. 

Also competing in the 1500m alongside Haines was Brock Newsome, who finished seventh at 4:35.83. 

Braelin June and Isaac Wright represented Asheville in the men's 400m final, finishing sixth (49.56, PR) and 8th (1:16.48), respectively. 

The final sections of the 5000m was a stacked event for Asheville, with 10 Bulldogs competing. Jan Málek led for the Bulldogs, taking fifth place at 14:53.03. He was joined by Yates Hockaday (12th, 15:33.73), Jonas Roach (14th, 15:39.42, PR), Dylan Major (17th, 15:56.93, PR) and Lance Surles (18th, 16:08.31). Isabel Richardson led the way on the women's side with a 13th-place finish at 18:11.74. She was followed by Madeline Wittschen (14th, 18:21.76), Emma Kennett (19th, 19:00.12), Ella Moore (20th, 19:06.12) and Alyx Beausoleil (22nd, 19:30.03). 

The men's 4x400m relay secured a season-best of 3:16.55 to take fourth. The team consisted of Jalen Anderson, Christopher Owens, Braelin June, and DaMarr Harvey

WEDNESDAY FIELD

Joining Moore in the javelin was Christina Jones, who placed 11th with 32.73 meters. 

Mallory Haney finished fourth in the women's high jump, clearing a personal best height of 1.60 meters. In the women's discus throw final, Madison Hannah finished 11th (41.26m, SB), Jaelyn Arnold finished 21st (34.67m), and Christina Jones finished 22nd (33.16m). 

Gabe Matthews placed 11th in the men's high jump, with his personal best height of 1.78 meters.
