Women's Basketball Falls Late to Radford on Senior Day

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball fell late on Senior Day on Saturday (Mar. 2) against Radford by a score of 55-54.
Asheville jumped out to a 17-3 lead through the first quarter, holding Radford to just 1-12 (8.3 percent) shooting in the frame. Asheville jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a pair of jumpers from Mallory Bruce and one free throw from McKinley Brooks-Sumpter, while ending the quarter on a 12-0 run.
Asheville stretched the lead to 22-3 in the second quarter, before Radford went on a run to get the game back within 11 with three minutes to play in the quarter. Radford would end the quarter getting the game back to within single digits, with Asheville leading 30-21 at the break.
Radford would close the gap in the third quarter to seven, outscoring Asheville 18-16. Radford opened the quarter on a run to cut the lead to five, before Asheville countered to get the lead back up to 10 with four minutes to play in the period. The lead fluctuated through the last few minutes, with Asheville heading to the fourth with a 46-39 lead.
Radford doubled up Asheville 16-8 in the fourth quarter, en route to a comeback victory. With 2:33 to play, Brooks-Sumpter drained a pull-up jumper from the elbow to put the Bulldogs ahead 53-50 before a Radford bucket got the game back to a one-point difference. The teams locked up at 54 after another good free throw from Brooks-Sumpter, before a late foul put Radford on the line for two. One of two was made, before the Bulldogs couldn't get a shot off on their final possession.
Asheville shot 38.2 percent (21-55) from the field, 38.5 percent (5-13) from long range and 77.8 percent (7-9) from the foul line in the game. Asheville outscored Radford 19-17 off the bench in the game, while also scoring seven points off turnovers, 12 points in the paint and eight points off second chances. Brooks-Sumpter led the Bulldogs with 15 points in the game, while Bruce added eight. Abigail Wilson and Trinity Fields each had five with Fields tying her career-high. Jaila Lee and LaImani Simmons each had four points in the game, while Faith Adams, Millie Brown and Dakota McCaughan each had three and Nycerra Minnis and Jamaya Blanks each had two. Brooks-Sumpter led the rebounding effort with eight boards, while Bruce had six and Wilson had five. Minnis pulled down four rebounds in the game, while Fields had three for a new career-high. Brown had two boards in the game, while Blanks also had one. Brooks-Sumpter had four assists in the game, while Bruce and Brown each had two and Fields and Blanks each had one. Blanks had two steals in the game, while Wilson, Adams and Brown each had one. Wilson also posted Asheville's lone rejection in the game.
