Women's Basketball Falls at Gardner-Webb on Saturday

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball fell at Gardner-Webb on Saturday (Feb. 24) in Big South Conference action by a score of 80-65.
The teams played to an 8-8 deadlock through five and a half minutes, before a Gardner-Webb 9-2 run put the home team ahead 17-10. A late Asheville three-pointer from Millie Brown sent the game to the second with Gardner-Webb leading 17-13.
Gardner-Webb would clamp down defensively and outscore Asheville 20-8 in the period, taking a 37-21 lead to the half.
Asheville was able to win the third quarter 20-16 to chip away at the deficit, but Gardner-Webb responded by winning the fourth quarter 27-24 to bring the game to its final score.
Asheville shot 35.3 percent (18-51) from the floor, just 16.7 percent (3-18) from long range and 86.7 percent (26-30) from the charity stripe, setting season-highs for both free throw attempts and free throws made. McKinley Brooks-Sumpter and Mallory Bruce each scored a game-high 21 points for Asheville, while Jaila Lee added nine points and Nycerra Minnis contributed four. Abigail Wilson and Brown each had three points in the game, while Jamaya Blanks and Trinity Fields each had two points. Asheville out-rebounded Gardner-Webb 33-29 in the game, led by Bruce with eight boards and Brooks-Sumpter with six. Lee, Faith Adams, Minnis, Blanks and Fields each had two boards, while Brown and Dakota McCaughan each had one. Adams dished out two assists in the game, while Brooks-Sumpter and Lee each had one. Brooks-Sumpter also had three steals and one block on the night for Asheville. Â
