Bulldogs Take Saturday Win over Bellarmine

Asheville struck first in the blow in the first inning, with Michael Groves drawing a bases-loaded walk to score Robbie Burnett before Ty Kaufman drew a bases-loaded walk to score Dylan Bacot. Bacot doubled home Burnett in the second to go ahead 3-0. Ben Hemphill brought home Kaufman in the third to make it 4-0, before the Bulldogs would add three in the fourth to go ahead 7-0. Asheville plated five runs in the fourth to go ahead 9-0. RBI singles from Cameron Johnson, Michael Groves, Kaufman and Hemphill along with a squeeze bunt from Coleman McGinnis brought home the runs in the frame. After Bellarmine scored their first run in the visiting half of the sixth, Asheville responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to stretch the lead to 14-1. A Groves double brought home Johnson, before a McGinnis single scored Groves. Kohl Abrams doubled to left center to score McGinnis, before he later scored on a ball in play off the bat of Corbin Lanowitz that ended in a Bellarmine error.
Bellarmine would make the game interesting in the ninth, scoring eight runs before Asheville was able to shut the door and secure the win.
Asheville totaled 14 runs on 18 hits, led by three hits apiece from Johnson, Kaufman and Hemphill. Burnett, Bacot and Groves each had two hits in the game, while Abrams, Lanowitz and McGinnis each had one. Burnett, Bacot, Johnson, Groves and Kaufman each scored two runs, while Abrams, Lanowitz, McGinnis and Hemphill each scored once. Groves led all Bulldogs with three runs batted in, while Kaufman, McGinnis and Hemphill each had two and Abrams, Bacot and Johnson each brought in one. Colby Guy (1-0) notched his first win as a Bulldog on the bump, firing five innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out seven. Justin Honeycutt fired one inning of relief with two punch outs, while Brett Johnson tossed two innings allowing two runs, one earned on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Nic Melton and Cole Bates combined to close the game out in the ninth.
Asheville returns to the diamond tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 25) looking for the series sweep over Bellarmine. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. from Greenwood Field, with live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com. Â
