Bulldogs Polish off Sweep of Bellarmine with Walk-Off Win on Sunday

Asheville scored four runs in the first, one in the second and five in the third to build a 10-0 lead headed to the fourth.
Cameron Johnson lined a bases-loaded single off of Bellarmine's pitcher to bring home Kohl Abrams to start the scoring, before Robbie Burnett scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. A ball in play off the bat of Michael Groves scored Dylan Bacot, before Brock Mercado singled up the middle to score Johnson. Burnett made it a 5-0 game with a solo homer to left center in the second, before a Mercado sacrifice fly brought home Johnson as the first run of the Asheville third. A sacrifice fly from Abrams would score Groves, before Bacot brought home Ben Hemphill and Ty Kaufman with a single to center. Corbin Lanowitz scored Burnett on a single up the middle as the Bulldogs led 10-0 through just three innings.
After Bellarmine got on the scoreboard in the fourth, Asheville countered with four in the bottom of the inning to stretch the lead to 14-1. Groves came home on a wild pitch, before Kaufman would later score on another wild pitch. Burnett would single home Abrams and Mercado later in the inning. Bellarmine would score four runs in the visiting half of the fifth, before the teams would trade scoreless frames until the bottom of the eighth. Abrams was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before Burnett launched his second bleacher creature of the game over the right field fence to bring the game to its final score.
Asheville totaled nine hits in the game, led by three from Burnett and two from Bacot. Lanowitz, Johnson, Groves and Mercado each had one hit in the game for Asheville. Burnett drove in a game-high five runs, while Bacot and Mercado each had two and Abrams, Lanowitz, Johnson and Groves each brought home one run in the game. Burnett scored four times in the game, while Abrams scored three times and Johnson, Groves and Kaufman each scored twice. Bacot, Mercado and Hemphill each also scored once in the game. Justin Honeycutt (1-1) earned the win on the bump, allowing one hit with one strikeout in the opening inning. Justin Needles would fire three innings of solid relief, allowing one run on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Nick Bruno came on to throw two innings of relief, allowing four runs, one earned on five hits with four strikeouts. Branden Barna finished the game off on the hill, with two scoreless innings scattering two hits along with two strikeouts.
Asheville returns to action on Tuesday (Feb. 27) at Western Carolina for a midweek non-conference tilt. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. from Cullowhee, N.C., with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
