Women's Basketball Drops Home Opener to Charlotte on Friday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball dropped its home opener to Charlotte on Friday (Nov. 15) inside Kimmel Arena by a score of 59-47.
 
After Asheville opened the scoring with a three-pointer from Abigail Wilson, Charlotte would go on a 12-0 run that spanned three minutes before Dakota McCaughan closed the gap to six with back-to-back three-pointers. The teams traded scores in the remaining minutes of the opening frame, that left Charlotte leading 19-14.
 
Charlotte opened the second quarter on a run to stretch the lead to 10, before LaImani Simmons knocked down a triple to cut the lead to six with five minutes to play in the frame. Asheville would cut the lead to five to end the half trailing 29-24.
 
Back-to-back jumpers by Wilson got the Bulldogs back within two and a half minutes into the third, before Charlotte would stretch the lead back up to nine. The lead would fluctuate, but the 49ers would take their nine-point lead to the fourth.
 
A low-scoring fourth quarter saw Charlotte outscore Asheville 12-9 to hold on for the win.
 
The Bulldogs shot 27.7 percent (13-47), 31.6 percent (6-19) from long range and 68.2 percent (15-22) from the foul line in the game. Asheville outscored Charlotte off the bench 36-16 in the game while also scoring eight points off turnovers, 10 points in the paint, four points off second chances and five points off fast breaks. McCaughan led the Bulldogs with 13 points in the game, while Simmons added 11 points off the bench. Wilson added seven points, while Sydney Burris chipped in a career-high six. Alana Swift and Taylor Wilkins each had three points, while Deborah Orianegbena had two and Nycerra Minnis and Briauna Thompson each had one. Asheville totaled 31 rebounds in the game, paced by five apiece from Swift and Burris with Swift being just one off her career-high in the game. Wilson and Simmons each pulled down four boards in the game, while McCaughan had three rebounds in the game. Wilkins had two rebounds in the contest, while Minnis, Thompson and Orianegbena each had one rebound. Swift and Simmons each led the way with two assists in the game, while Skylar Bailey, McCaughan, Wilkins, Orianegbena and Thompson each had one in the game. McCaughan, Simmons and Orianegbena each had one steal in the game, while Burris recorded her first block as a Bulldog in the contest.
 
The Bulldogs return to the floor on Tuesday (Nov. 19) at UNC Greensboro in non-conference action. Tip-off is set for 11:00 a.m. from Greensboro, N.C. with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
