Bulldogs Grind Out 62-59 Win at Charleston Southern on Saturday

CHARLESTON, S.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball was able to grind out a 62-59 win at Charleston Southern on Saturday (Jan. 27) in Big South Conference action.

Asheville won the first quarter 13-11, before Charleston Southern responded to win the second quarter 14-11 as the Buccaneers took a 25-24 lead to the half.

Each team scored 21 points in the third quarter, with Charleston Southern taking a 46-45 lead to the fourth. Charleston Southern would extend its lead to as many as six just three and a half minutes into the third quarter, before the Bulldogs trimmed the lead to just two with three minutes to play in the period. The teams traded buckets through the remainder of the frame, with Asheville taking a brief 45-44 lead on a Mallory Bruce bucket with 37 seconds left in the quarter. A late Charleston Southern bucket gave them the lead headed to the fourth.

Asheville held an ultimate 17-13 scoring edge in the fourth quarter to bring the game to its final score. The teams played to a 49-49 deadlock 90 seconds into the fourth, before the teams went bucket-for-bucket to a 54-54 tie with four and a half minutes to play. Charleston Southern rebuilt a three-point lead with under two and a half minutes to play, before a jumper from McKinley Brooks-Sumpter and a three-pointer from Bruce on the next two possessions gave Asheville a 61-59 lead with just 39 seconds left. Asheville held strong defensively in the final seconds, highlighted by a huge block in the final seconds by Brooks-Sumpter on a three-pointer attempt by Jordan Berry.

Asheville shot 38.5 percent (25-65) from the field, 26.7 percent (4-15) from three-point range and 66.7 percent (8-12) from the free throw line in the win. Asheville scored seven points off turnovers, 20 points in the paint, eight second-chance points and seven points off the bench in the game. Brooks-Sumpter paced the Bulldogs with a game-high and new career-high 27 points, eclipsing 800 points for her collegiate career on a career-high 11 made field goals. Bruce tied her season-high with 16 points in the game, while Jaila Lee added 10 points in the game. Millie Brown contributed three points in the win, while Faith Adams, Nycerra Minnis and Jamaya Blanks each had two points in the game. Brooks-Sumpter notched her fourth double-double of the season with a game-high 11 rebounds, while Jamaya Blanks also pulled down six boards in the game. Bruce and Lee each grabbed three rebounds in the game, while Adams, Minnis, Briauna Thompson and Abigail Wilson each had two rebounds in the game. Adams hit her career-high for a fourth time dishing out a game-high six assists, while Bruce, Lee and Brown each had one in the game. Adams, Bruce, Lee and Brooks-Sumpter each had one steal in the win, while Brooks-Sumpter posted Asheville's two blocks in the game.
