Women's Basketball Drops Overtime Contest to Winthrop Wednesday Night

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball dropped its first overtime contest of the season to visiting Winthrop Wednesday night (Jan. 17) inside Kimmel Arena by a score of 70-65.
Winthrop jumped out to a five-point lead in the early goings of the first quarter, before Asheville rallied to tie the game at 11-11 with three minutes to play in the period. After the teams played to another deadlock at 14-14, Winthrop out-scored Asheville 5-2 in the final 1:49 to take a 19-16 lead to the second quarter.
Asheville responded by winning the second quarter 19-14 to take a 35-33 lead to the half. Asheville built a five-point lead through the first two and a half minutes of the period, before Winthrop rallied to build its own five-point lead with three and a half minutes to play in the frame. The teams played to a 31-31 deadlock with under two minutes to play in the half, before Asheville scored four of the final six points in the period to take the one-possession lead to the break.
The game was tied 37-37 through three minutes of the third quarter, before the teams played to a 39-39 deadlock with five minutes to play in the half. After locking up at 41-41 with four minutes to play in the frame, Asheville scored eight consecutive points before Winthrop countered with two quick scoring possessions to end the quarter with Asheville leading 49-45.
Two quick scores by Winthrop tied the game at 49 early in the fourth quarter, before the teams locked up at 51-all just over two minutes into the period. The teams traded baskets and played to a 56-56 tie with 3:25 to play in regulation, before each team scored just two more points before heading to the extra session.
Winthrop outscored Asheville 12-6 in the extra frame to secure the road victory.
Asheville shot 41.1 percent (23-56) from the floor, 23.5 percent (4-17) from long range and 82.4 percent (14-17) from the free throw line in the game. Asheville also outscored Winthrop 26-13 off turnovers, 32-26 in the paint and 33-11 off the bench in the game. McKinley Brooks-Sumpter led all scorers notching 21 points for the second straight game, while LaImani Simmons also added 14 points in the game. Abigail Wilson finished with nine points in the game, while Mallory Bruce, Jaila Lee and Briauna Thompson each finished with four points. Millie Brown and Jamaya Blanks each had three points, while Faith Adams also had two. Brooks-Sumpter and Wilson each had six rebounds in the game, while Thompson had four and Bruce had three. Blanks grabbed two boards in the game, while Simmons, Brown and Adams each had one. Brooks-Sumpter tied her career-high with a game-high six assists on the night, while Blanks and Adams each had two and Thompson, Lee and Simmons each had one. Brooks-Sumpter and Adams each had two steals on the night, while Wilson also had one. Wilson also recorded the lone block in the game for Asheville.
