Baseball Travels to Western Carolina on Wednesday

05.02.2023 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team will be back in action on Wednesday when it visits rival Western Carolina for a non-conference matchup. First pitch between the Bulldogs and Catamounts is set for 5 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and can be seen locally on CW62.

Probable Pitching Matchup
RHP Ryan Douglas (Asheville) vs. RHP Brandon Eldridge (WCU) – 5 p.m. | Live Stats | ESPN+

Last Time Out – Asheville dropped a 13-0 decision to Wofford in its last game. With the loss to the Terriers, the Bulldogs moved to 21-19 on the 2023 season.

Ode to the Offense – Collectively, the Bulldogs are hitting .275 as a team in 2023, which is 22 points higher than their final team batting average in 2022 (.253). If the Bulldogs can maintain their current pace, it'll mark the highest batting average for the team since 2013 when that Bulldog team also hit .275.

Count on Kohl to Get on Base – Kohl Abrams, who was recently named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List that goes to the nation's top shortstop, has reached base successfully in 11 straight games. Abrams has played and started all 40 games at shortstop for Asheville and is hitting .333 with two home runs and 20 RBI to go with a .448 on-base percentage and five stolen bases.

Bacot & RBI – Dylan Bacot is nearing a mark that few Bulldogs have reached in program history. Bacot needs to drive in just four more runs to reach 50 RBI on the season. If he can reach that mark, he'll be just the tenth Bulldog to ever reach this milestone and the first since Joe Tietjen in 2016.

Win Total Watch – Asheville has won 21 games this season, which matches its win total from all of 2022. The Bulldogs need to win just eight more games to tally the most wins for a single season in program history (28 in 2006). Including Wednesday's game at Western Carolina, the Bulldogs have 12 games remaining in the regular season.

About Western Carolina – Western Carolina will bring a record of 16-26 with it into Wednesday's tilt with Asheville. WCU dropped its series at ETSU over the weekend two games to one. A player to watch for Western Carolina is Pascanel Ferreras, who is leading the team with a .313 batting average with nine home runs and 40 RBI.

Series Rewind vs. the Catamounts – Historically, Western Carolina has held the edge against the Bulldogs winning 54 of the 79 all-time meetings. The Catamounts downed the Bulldogs 13-4 earlier this season at Greenwood Field. With that said, Asheville has defeated Western Carolina the last five times that these teams have met in Cullowhee.
