Asheville Splits a Doubleheader at Gardner-Webb on Thursday

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team split a doubleheader on the road at Gardner-Webb on Thursday. Gardner-Webb came away with a 13-3 win in the first game of the day, but the Bulldogs rebounded to take game two, 6-4. With Thursday's results, Asheville is now 18-12 overall and 5-6 in Big South play.
Game One Recap – The Bulldogs scored first in the first game of Thursday's doubleheader. Asheville was able to scratch across a pair of runs without a hit to open a 2-0 lead. Gardner-Webb cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom half of the first. The Bulldog lead went back up to two thanks to a solo home run from Robbie Burnett. It marks the third straight game that Burnett has homered.
Gardner-Webb answered Burnett's solo shot with two runs of their own to tie the score, 3-3, heading to the fourth. The Runnin' Bulldogs would break the game open with seven runs in the fourth to make the score 10-3. GWU would add insurance runs in the fifth and eighth innings. Runnin' Bulldog starter Bobby Alcock took things the rest of the way to finish off the 13-3 win.
Alcock limited Asheville to just three hits in game one. Burnett scored two of Asheville's three runs to go with his solo home run. Michael Groves and Tony Castonguay also had hits for the Bulldogs.
Game Two Recap – Just like in the first game of the day, the Bulldogs struck first with a pair of runs to start the game off. Burnett scored on a wild pitch before Cameron Johnson drove in Corbin Lanowitz with a single to grow the Bulldog lead to 2-0.
Asheville starter Ryan Douglas pitched well as he kept Gardner-Webb off the scoreboard until the fourth when a solo home run cut the lead to 2-1. Ty Kaufman and Dylan Bacot drove in runs in the fifth to grow the Bulldog to three, 4-1.
A two-run single from Gardner-Webb in the fifth made it a one-run game against, 4-3. Asheville received a big hit in the sixth when Groves launched a two-run home run to push Asheville's advantage back to three runs, 6-3.
Justin Honeycutt relieved Douglas and tossed 3.1 shutout innings allowing just three hits in his outing. Gardner-Webb did load the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Dawson Salter came in to record the final out and preserve Asheville's 6-4 win.
