Gardner-Webb Outlasts Asheville on Friday, 11-9
04.07.2023 | Baseball
Asheville's offense continued to produce at a high level on Friday with five players posting multi-hit days. Dylan Bacot notched three run-producing hits in a 3-for-5 day at the plate, while Robbie Burnett and Kohl Abrams both launched home runs in two-hit performances. Corbin Lanowitz and Ty Kaufman matched those two players with a pair of hits each. Overall, Asheville's top four hitters in its batting order (Kaufman, Burnett, Bacot, Lanowitz) combined to go 9-for-17 (.529 batting average) with five runs driven in.
After the Bulldogs scored first in the first two games of the series, it was Gardner-Webb that struck first on Friday. The Runnin' Bulldogs were able to scratch across a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead.
Asheville would tie the game in the third thanks to three hits and a Gardner-Webb error. Bacot and Lanowitz both came through with RBI singles to bring Asheville even, 2-2. The Bulldogs would take their first lead of the game in the fifth when Burnett launched an opposite field home run. It marked the fourth time in the last five games that Burnett has homered.
The Bulldogs looked like they blew the game open in the sixth. Lanowitz led the frame off with a single. Tylan Reece then doubled down the line to score Lanowitz to extend Asheville's lead to two, 4-2. The big blow in the inning, however, came a couple batters later when Abrams got a hold of a pitch and drove it over the fence for a three-run home run to make it 7-2 Asheville. Bacot would drive in another run with a single before Gardner-Webb could get the third out to make the score 8-2 Bulldogs.
After allowing those pair of unearned runs to start the game, Asheville starter Clay Edmondson settled things down and pitched well. Edmondson pitched six innings, allowed five hits, those two runs (not earned) to go with six strikeouts. It marks the fourth time this season that Edmondson has struck out six or more hitters in a start.
Trailing by six runs heading into the seventh, Gardner-Webb mounted a sizable rally after Edmondson left the game. The Runnin' Bulldogs scored six times in the seventh inning to tie the game at 8-8.
Even with yet another RBI single from Bacot to make the score 9-8 Bulldogs going to the bottom of the eighth, Gardner-Webb continued to ride that wave momentum it started in the seventh. A single and a walk was followed by a clutch three-run home run to put Gardner-Webb on top 11-9, which ended up being the final score.
Asheville will return to action on Tuesday when it welcomes in mountain rival Western Carolina to Greenwood Field for a non-conference matchup. First pitch between the Bulldogs and Catamount is slated for 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
