ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team picked up a 7-2 victory over Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon at Greenwood Field. The win not only completes the series sweep for the Bulldogs, but it also improves their record 3-0 this season. It's Asheville's first 3-0 start since 2012.
Like in its first two wins against the Pioneers, Asheville had several players contribute. Ty Kaufman led the way with a 3-for-5 day at the plate with three runs scored and two stolen bases. Robbie Burnett continued his hot start to the new season going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two more runs driven in, and Cameron Johnson drove in two runs as well.
Justin Honeycutt made the start for Asheville on Sunday. Honeycutt, who got the win on Sunday, kept Sacred Heart's offense in check allowing one run (not earned) on one hit to go with four strikeouts over five innings of work. Justin Needles, Chris Sabo, and Dawson Salter followed Honeycutt out of the Bulldog bullpen and held the Pioneers to one run on three hits over the final four innings on Sunday.
Asheville wasted little time jumping on Sacred Heart in the series finale. After a scoreless top half of the first, Kaufman got things started with a bunt single. Kaufman quickly stole second to give Asheville a runner in scoring position with nobody out.
Burnett came through with a one-out RBI single shortly after that to plate the first run of the game. Burnett came around to score after a fly ball was dropped in center field to make it 2-0 Bulldogs.
The top of the Bulldog order came through again in the third. Kaufman singled and stole second again to give another scoring chance to Asheville. A heads-up base running play allowed Kaufman to advance to third on a groundout from Tony Castonguay. Burnett then drove Kaufman in with a single to grow Asheville's lead to three.
Dylan Bacot doubled to right field before Johnson drove both Burnett and Bacot in with a single to make the score 5-0 Asheville.
Sacred Heart scratched across an unearned run in the fifth before the Bulldogs tacked on two more runs in the sixth. The Pioneers would score again with an RBI double in the eighth. However, late-inning relief work from Sabo and Salter stopped the potential Pioneer rally there and Asheville finished off the 7-2 victory.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Tuesday when they hit the road for a mid-week clash at Wofford. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
