SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team fell on the road at Wofford by a score of 4-0 on Tuesday night. With Tuesday's loss, the Bulldogs move to 3-1 on the 2023 season.
Most of Asheville's highlights on Tuesday came from the mound. Isaac Williams was solid in his first career start and appearance tossing three innings and allowing one run. Overall, the Bulldogs used seven pitchers against the Terriers and five of them posted scoreless appearances. The trio of Cole Bates, Nick Bruno, and Spencer Hill were especially good late in the game, tossing one inning each, allowing one hit between the three of them and totaling eight strikeouts. Both Bates and Bruno struck out the side in their respective innings.
Wofford's pitching staff held the Bulldog offense to one hit on Tuesday. The lone hit was from Tony Castonguay in the seventh inning. Dylan Bacot and Corbin Lanowitz also reached base in the contest.
The Terriers scored all four of their runs in the beginning of the game. Wofford scratched across a run in the first off Williams without a hit. Wofford's big inning, however, came in the fourth. A pair of hit batters, a walk, and throwing error by the Bulldogs made the score 2-0 Terriers. A two-run double followed that to make it 4-0 Wofford and proved to be the final runs scored on Tuesday.
Asheville's best scoring chance on Tuesday came in the seventh inning. Castonguay got things started with his one-out single. Bacot was hit by a pitch and Lanowitz reached base after a strikeout. With a bases loaded chance, the Bulldogs did not get that key hit to mount a rally and Wofford held on for the 4-0 win.
Asheville will return to action on Friday when it opens a three-game series at Eastern Kentucky. Friday's series opener is scheduled for a 4 p.m. first pitch on ESPN+.
