Bulldogs Cruise Past Warren Wilson for Education Day Victory

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville Women's Basketball team cruised past Warren Wilson for an 88-33 victory on Education Day on Wednesday (Dec. 6) at Kimmel Arena. This marks the fewest points that Asheville has given up in a single game since the Education Day game back on Dec. 3, 2018 against Warren Wilson when Asheville won 92-31.

Asheville built its lead steadily through the first quarter, breaking through for a double-digit lead with under three minutes to play in the period. Asheville would close the quarter on a 12-0 run through the final three and a half minutes to take a 28-7 lead to the second.

The Bulldogs opened the second quarter on an 11-0 run through six and a half minutes in the second quarter, holding Warren Wilson to eight points in the frame to take a 53-15 lead to the half.

Asheville would outscore Warren Wilson 17-12 in the third quarter, and 18-6 in the fourth to bring the game to its final score.

Asheville outscored Warren Wilson 45-4 off turnovers in the game, 38-10 in the paint, 22-6 on second chances, 8-0 on fast breaks and 38-5 off the bench in the game. The Bulldogs shot a season-high 42.9 percent (33-77) from the field, 26.9 percent (7-26) from beyond the arc and 78.9 percent (15-19) from the foul line in the game. McKinley Brooks-Sumpter led the Bulldogs with a game-high 16 points in the contest, while Jaila Lee also had 10 points in the game. Millie Brown tied her career-high with nine points in the game while also tying career-highs in three-point shooting in the game (3-7), while Dakota McCaughan and Abigail Wilson each also had nine points in the game. Nycerra Minnis and LaImani Simmons each had eight points in the game, while Mallory Bruce added seven points. Taylor Wilkins added three points while tying her career-high in field goal attempts in a game (11), while Briauna Thompson also had three points in the game. Trinity Fields, Jamaya Blanks and Faith Adams each also had two points in the game. Asheville pulled down a season-high 51 rebounds in the game, out-rebounding Warren Wilson 51-32. Wilson, Thompson and Blanks each had a game-high seven rebounds to lead the Bulldogs, while Brooks-Sumpter and Minnis each had six boards in the game. Lee pulled down four rebounds in the game, while Simmons had three and Brown, Bruce and Fields each had two. Wilkins also had one rebound in the game. Fields also tied her career-high for rebounds in the game. Asheville dished out a season-high 22 assists in the game, led by a game-high five from McCaughan. Bruce had four assists in the game, while Lee added three and Blanks, Brown, Fields and Wilkins each had two with Fields notching a career-high. Brooks-Sumpter and Simmons each had one helper in the game. Asheville recorded a season-high 18 steals in the game, led by three each from Blanks and Lee with both players tying their career-high marks. McCaughan, Brown, Fields and Wilkins each had two steals in the game with Fields recording a career-high, while Brooks-Sumpter, Wilson, Thompson and Minnis each had one steal in the game. Blanks, Wilson, Thompson and Simmons each had one block in the game for Asheville.

Asheville has now started 3-0 at home for the first time since the 2018-19 season, with that start coming with a 74-49 win over Western Carolina (Nov. 17, 2018), a 69-56 win over Davidson (Nov. 21, 2018) and a 60-46 win over Wofford (Nov. 25, 2018).

The Bulldogs return to the hardwood on Saturday (Dec. 9) for the 2023-24 installment of the mountain rivalry with Western Carolina. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. from Ingles Court at the Liston B.
