Women's Basketball Drops Tight Battle to Western Michigan on Saturday

SAN JUAN, P.R. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball dropped a tight battle to Western Michigan in non-conference action by a score of 58-54 on Saturday (Nov. 25).

The teams played to an 8-8 deadlock through the first five minutes, before a three-pointer from LaImani Simmons and a pair of free throws from Faith Adams would put the Bulldogs ahead by five 1:45 to play in the period. After Western Michigan cut the lead to one, Mallory Bruce polished off the quarter with a layup just before the buzzer to send the game to the second with Asheville leading 17-14.

Asheville stretched its lead to seven in the first minute and a half of the second, before Western Michigan would eventually cut the lead back to two with two and a half minutes to play in the period. Asheville finished the quarter on a 6-0 run from McKinley Brooks-Sumpter in the final 1:14, with the redshirt senior scoring a jumper and going 4-4 from the foul line in that span.

Western Michigan would win the third quarter 16-15, but Asheville still led by seven headed to the fourth. The Broncos defense turned up the intensity, holding Asheville to just seven points in the period to come away with the win.

Asheville shot 32.7 percent (18-55) from the field, 20.0 percent from beyond the arc (3-15) and 88.2 percent (15-17) from the foul line in the game. Asheville was paced by a game-high 17 points from Brooks-Sumpter, as she went a perfect 7-7 from the stripe to tie her career-high in made free throws. Simmons added 11 points in the game, while Adams and Jamaya Blanks each had eight. Bruce added four, while Dakota McCaughan had three, along with two from Abigail Wilson and one from Briauna Thompson. Blanks led Asheville with nine rebounds in the game, just one off her career-high, while Brooks-Sumpter also pulled down seven. Lee grabbed six rebounds, while Adams, Bruce, Wilson and Thompson each had three. McCaughan hauled in two rebounds in the game, while Simmons, Nycerra Minnis and Millie Brown each had one rebound in the game. Adams led the Bulldogs with three assists in the game, while Lee and Bruce each had two and Simmons also had one helper in the contest. Blanks and Brooks-Sumpter each had two steals in the game, while Lee, Bruce and Simmons each had one. Blanks and Lee also each registered one block in the game.

The Bulldogs return to the floor on Wednesday (Nov. 29) to battle Wofford on the road. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. from Spartanburg, S.C., with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
