Furious Fourth Quarter Rally Falls Short for Women's Basketball Against Morgan State

SAN JUAN, P.R. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball's furious fourth-quarter rally fell just short against Morgan State on Friday (Nov. 24), with the Bulldogs falling by a score of 53-51.
A slow-moving first quarter saw Asheville take a 6-4 lead, before the Bulldogs outscored the Bears 11-7 in the second to take a 15-13 lead to the half.
Morgan State responded with a strong third quarter, outscoring Asheville 21-12 in the period to take a 34-27 lead to the fourth.
The Bulldogs saw their deficit fluctuate throughout the fourth quarter, trimming it to as few as three and seeing it grow to as many as nine. Morgan State held an eight-point lead through a minute and a half in the period, before a three-pointer from LaImani Simmons and a pair of free throws from Mallory Bruce got the Bulldogs back within three a minute later. The deficit went back up to seven just past the halfway point of the period, before a clutch three-pointer from Millie Brown cut the deficit to four with three minutes to play. Morgan State pushed their lead back to eight inside two minutes to play, before Asheville rattled off three straight scoring possessions to get back within two with under a minute to play. A jumper from Jaila Lee and back-to-back scores from Simmons got Asheville to within 50-48 with 48 seconds left. Morgan State pushed the lead to four with free throws with 19 seconds left, before Brown knocked down another clutch three-pointer to cut the deficit to one with eight seconds left. Asheville's last possession came up just short after a full court run following a split pair of Morgan State free throws.
Asheville shot 31.0 percent (18-58) from the field, 29,4 percent (5-17) from three-point land and 66.7 percent (10-15) from the foul line in the game. Asheville scored nine points off turnovers, 26 points in the paint, 12 points off second chances, three off fast breaks and also outscored Morgan State off the bench 25-21. Simmons led the Bulldogs with a game-high 14 points, while Bruce and Brown each had eight points in the game. McKinley Brooks-Sumpter had seven points in the game, while Lee had six points, Faith Adams had five and Briauna Thompson had three. Asheville out-rebounded 43-32 in the game, led by a game-high eight boards from Brooks-Sumpter. Lee had seven rebounds in the game, while Abigail Wilson and Bruce each had six rebounds in the game. Simmons pulled down five rebounds in the game, while Adams had four, Thompson had three and Brown and Nycerra Minnis each had two. Adams dished out a team-high three assists in the game, while Brooks-Sumpter also had two. Bruce and Thompson also each had one assist in the game. Bruce, Lee and Simmons each had two steals in the game, while Thompson also had one. Bruce posted two blocks in the game, while Thompson, Brooks-Sumpter and Wilson each had one block in the game.
