Bulldogs Grind Out League Win over Charleston Southern Wednesday Night

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's basketball team was able to grind out a 43-40 win over Charleston Southern inside Kimmel Arena Wednesday night (Jan. 18).
After trading buckets through the first few minutes, the Bulldogs were able to build a five-point advantage off a three-pointer from Millie Brown with three minutes to play in the quarter. After Charleston Southern cut the lead to one with two minutes to play in the period, the Bulldogs countered with buckets on their next two possessions to take a 16-10 lead to the second.
Asheville extended the lead to as many as nine in the early goings of the second quarter, before Charleston Southern would trim the lead to just three at the halfway point of the period. The lead shot back up to eight for the Bulldogs before they were finally able to stretch it into double digits, taking a 31-20 lead to the half.
Charleston Southern would chip away in the third quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 10-7 in the period as Asheville took a 38-30 lead to the fourth. Charleston Southern would get within two in the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs were able to hang on to defend home floor and pick up the win.
Asheville scored 13 points off turnovers in the game, 12 points in the paint and 15 off the bench. Mallory Bruce led the way for Asheville with her second career double-double, notching 11 points and tying a career-high with 11 rebounds. Jordaynia Ivie contributed eight points in the game, while Jamaya Blanks also had six and Jamia Blake had five. Faith Adams contributed four points in the game, while Dakota McCaughan and Brown each had three points in the game. Nycerra Minnis also added two points, while Abigail Wilson had one. Asheville won the battle on the boards 37-36, led by 11 from Bruce and five from Ivie. Adams pulled down four boards in the game, while Blanks and Minnis each had three. Blake and Wilson each had two, while McCaughan also had one. Ivie dished out a team-high three assists in the game, while Bruce had two and Blake and McCaughan each helped on one Asheville bucket in the game. Bruce and McCaughan each had a team-high three steals in the game, while Ivie and Brown (career-high) each had two and Minnis also had one. Blanks also posted the lone rejection in the game for Asheville.
