Women’s Soccer preps for a road matchup at The Citadel on Thursday

08.24.2022 | Women's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team will head back out on the road on Thursday when it pays a visit to The Citadel for a non-conference tilt. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. from Charleston, S.C. on ESPN+.

Last Time Out – Asheville collected a dominant 4-1 victory over VMI last Sunday at Greenwood Field. The win pushes the Bulldogs' record to 1-0-1 on the young season after tying Wofford 2-2 in their season opener.

Big South Offensive Player of the Week – A key part in Asheville beginning this season undefeated has been the play of Taylor Gardner. Gardner scored two goals and added two assists last week on her way to being named the Big South's Offensive Player of the Week. It marks the second weekly award of Gardner's career and she is the first Bulldog to earn the Conference's Offensive/Attacking Player of the Week award since 2017.

Sunday was full of firsts – Gardner was not the only Bulldog to have a stellar performance in Sunday's win over the Keydets. Sophomore Daysha Chaney netted a pair of goals, which included the game-winner, while freshman Brooklyn Scythes added a goal of her own to seal the win. For both players, those goals marked the first of their respective college careers.

About The Citadel – The Citadel enters Thursday's match with Asheville sporting a 0-1 record. The Bulldogs dropped a 2-0 decision on the road at Navy to open their season. In 2021, The Citadel went 10-7-2 that included a 3-4-2 record in Southern Conference action.

Series Rewind vs. the Bulldogs – The series history between The Citadel and Asheville consists of just five previous matchups. Asheville has won four of the five meetings, including a 1-0 triumph at Greenwood Field last September. That victory marked the first of Head Coach Andy McNab's tenure at Asheville.

How to Follow – As mentioned previously, Thursday's match will be streamed on ESPN+. Live stats will also be available for following HERE.
