A late goal lifts The Citadel past Asheville, 2-1
08.25.2022 | Women's Soccer
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team dropped its first match of the 2022 campaign on Thursday at The Citadel as the latter netted the game-winning goal in the 89th minute to finish off the 2-1 win. With Thursday's result, the Bulldogs are now 1-1-1 on the 2022 season.
Thursday's match was competitive throughout with not a ton of separation. The Citadel broke the scoreless tie in the 36th minute with a goal from Suzuka Yosue. As the first half came to an end, the Bulldogs forced The Citadel's keeper to make a couple of saves thanks to shots from Kaiya Boyd and Solveig Schlitter. The Citadel's keeper, however, was up to the task and kept her team in front, 1-0, heading into the intermission.
Asheville kept threatening to tie the score as the second half began. They would finally find the equalizer in the 62nd minute as Anna Doane placed a perfect free kick that Lindie Clark headed in to tie the match at 1-1. The assist marked the first collegiate point for Doane, while Clark's goal was the first of her Bulldog career.
Asheville will return home on Sunday when it plays host to South Carolina State at Greenwood Field. Kickoff for that matchup is set for 4:30 p.m. on ESPN+.

With the match tied again, neither Asheville nor The Citadel stopped pressuring. Unfortunately for Asheville, The Citadel found the game-winning goal. In the 89th minute, a blocked shot led to another attempt and Makenzie DePriest-Kessler found the back of the net to put The Citadel back in front for good, 2-1.GOAL!!!
