ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's soccer team routed South Carolina State on Sunday, beating the visiting team 6 - 0. With this win, the Bulldogs bring their record to 2-1-1, making it their best start to a season since 2017 when they won three out of their first four matches.
Asheville started off flat footed as the game began, but slowly began to increase the pressure on the South Carolina State defenders as the first half went along. The seal finally burst as Brooklyn Scythes found the back of the net for her second goal of the season off a cross from Taylor Gardner in the 22nd minute.

From there the Bulldogs kept scoring as they added two goals within the next four minutes. Taylor Gardner continued to add to her tremendous season scoring easily after dribbling past the defenders in the 23rd minute.

Kaiya Boyd was the next Bulldog to score, connecting off a pass from Solveig Schlitter and bringing the score up to 3-0 before the first half ended. In the first half alone, Asheville put up 20 shots on the South Carolina State defense.

The pressure from the Bulldogs continued right through to the second half with Gardner striking again for her team leading fourth goal of the season. Gardner now is tied for the Big South lead in goals and assists after today with four goals and four assists on the season.Â

Next, Lillian Morrison stamped her first goal of the season on a header taken off a corner kick in the 70th minute.

Schlitter was the last to score for the Bulldogs, icing the game in the 81st minute and scoring her first goal in her collegiate career.

Asheville will return home on Thursday when it hosts mountain rivals Western Carolina University at Greenwood Field. Kickoff for that matchup is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
