ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to rival Western Carolina Thursday night at Greenwood Field. With Thursday's loss, the Bulldogs' record dips to 2-2-1 on the season.
The visiting Catamounts came out ready to roll against the Bulldogs. Asheville's defense backed by goaltender Bronwyn Luitwieler faced a total of 11 shot attempts from Western Carolina in the first 45 minutes. Luitwieler was impressive making six saves in the first half alone.
Luitwieler and the rest of the Bulldog defense also thwarted four WCU corner kicks to keep the score 0-0 going into halftime.
Western Carolina would break through in the 52nd minute. Rea Syska collected the rebound off a previous shot by Naya Marcil to give the Catamounts the 1-0 advantage.
Facing its first deficit of the match, the Bulldogs answered the Catamount goal with one their own in the 59th minute. Azalea Mihailovich netted her second goal of the season to tie the score, 1-1.
After about 10 minutes tied, Western Carolina again jumped out in front again with a goal from Maggie Lloyd that snuck past Luitwieler to make the score 2-1.
Instead of the Bulldogs finding another equalizer, it was the Catamounts that found the next score to add to their lead as Sophie Burchfield found the top right corner of the net to extend the lead to two, 3-1, which proved to be the final score.
Asheville will look to bounce back on Sunday when it visits Elon in another non-conference tilt. Kickoff for that contest is set for 7 p.m.
