Women’s Soccer hits to the road to Elon on Sunday

09.03.2022 | Women's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team will be back in action on Sunday when it visits Elon for a non-conference matchup. Kickoff between the Bulldogs and Phoenix is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Last Time Out – Asheville dropped a 3-1 contest to Western Carolina on Thursday at Greenwood Field. With the loss, the Bulldogs are now 2-2-1 on the 2022 campaign.

Taylor remains in the top 10 – Despite not scoring a point on Thursday vs. Western Carolina, sophomore Taylor Gardner remains near the top of the national leaderboard in terms of scoring. Gardner leads the Big South with 11 points scored this fall, which ranks eighth in the nation.

Spreading the scoring – Led by Gardner, the Bulldogs have been able to rely on multiple players to provide some offense in 2022. The trio of Daysha Chaney, Azalea Mihailovich, and Brooklyn Scythes have all netted two goals this season. Overall, the Bulldogs rank 17th in Division I women's soccer in goals scored with 14.

Beginning a road swing – After playing three of its first five matches of the season at Greenwood Field, Asheville will begin a three-match road swing with its match Sunday at Elon. After Sunday's matchup, the Bulldogs will travel to Davidson next Thursday and East Tennessee State on the Sunday after to conclude the streak of road contests.

About the Phoenix – Elon will bring a 1-2-1 record with it into its matchup with the Bulldogs on Sunday. The Phoenix defeated American 3-0, tied Howard 3-3 before suffering a pair of losses to ACC-foes Virginia Tech (5-1) and NC State (2-1).

Series Rewind vs. Elon – Historically, Elon has held the edge against the Bulldogs winning nine of the 13 all-time matches between the two schools. One of those wins was last season when the Phoenix won a 3-0 contest at Greenwood Field. Asheville will look to earn its first win in the series since 1998 in Sunday's match.
