Bulldogs fall in the series opener at Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. – Presbyterian scored 10 runs and racked up 15 hits on its way to a 10-1 victory over the UNC Asheville baseball team Friday evening in Big South action. The loss drops Asheville's record to 9-15 overall and 4-3 in Big South play.
Asheville finished with eight hits against the Blue Hose on Friday. Robbie Burnett matched a season-high with three of those hits in a 3-for-4 effort. Dominic Freeberger continued his hot streak in the batters' box, going 2-for-4 with a double. Ty Kaufman, PJ Heintz, and Tylan Reece accounted for the other hits for Asheville.
A total of six Bulldog pitchers saw time on the mound against PC. Zeus Ponder made his second start of the 2022 campaign and worked the first 2.1 innings. Ponder, who ended up getting saddled with the loss, did strike out four hitters in his outing. Asheville native Chris Banks made his 2022 debut and tossed a scoreless inning in the fourth.
Following two scoreless frames to begin the game, the Bulldogs cracked the scoreboard first in the third inning as Burnet drove in Freeberger to give Asheville a 1-0 lead. PC, however, answered back in a significant way in the bottom half. The Blue Hose pounded out eight hits, four of which went for extra bases in the frame. By the end of the inning, PC scored six runs and vaulted in front of the Bulldogs, 6-1.
Presbyterian would add insurance runs in the fifth (two-run single), seventh (bases-loaded walk), and eighth (solo home run) to clinch the victory in the series opener, 10-1.
Asheville and Presbyterian will resume the series on Saturday afternoon. The first pitch for that contest is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
