Baseball preps for a rivalry game at Western Carolina on Tuesday

03.21.2022 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team will briefly take a break from Big South play on Tuesday to renew a mountain rivalry at Western Carolina. The first pitch between the Bulldogs and Catamounts is scheduled for 5 p.m. on ESPN+.

Last Time Out – Asheville played its first Big South series of the season over the weekend at Longwood. The Lancers won two of the three games by scores of 14-3 and 16-8, but the Bulldogs notched a 7-3 victory on Saturday. The Bulldogs are 5-13 overall on the 2022 season with last weekend's results.

Honeycutt named Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week – Sophomore Justin Honeycutt was named the Big South's Relief Pitcher of the Week earlier today. Honeycutt played a crucial role in Asheville's 7-3 win over Longwood Saturday and did not allow an earned run in 5.2 innings last week.

Leaving the Yard at Longwood – Despite dropping Sunday's series finale at Longwood, the Bulldogs slugged a season-high three home runs in the contest. Michael Groves and Tylan Reece both hit their first home runs as Bulldogs, and PJ Heintz added a long ball too. Prior to that game, Asheville had hit just four home runs in the 17 games this season.

Reece starting to roll – On top of his home run on Sunday, Reece has been one of Asheville's hottest hitters recently. Reece, who transferred to Asheville from Southeastern Community College with teammate Dylan Bacot, hit .429 last week in 14 at-bats and brings a four-game hitting streak with him into Tuesday's tilt in Cullowhee.

About Western Carolina – WCU enters Tuesday's rivalry matchup with a 10-10 record so far in 2022. The Catamounts are coming off a series win over the UT Martin over the weekend, where they won two of the three games. A strength for Western Carolina this season has been its ability to produce offensively. Collectively, WCU is hitting .292 as a team with 22 home runs and 29 stolen bases in 20 games played.

Series Rewind vs. Western Carolina – There is no shortage of history between the Bulldogs and Catamounts as these two programs have matched up nearly 80 times over the years. Even with WCU leading the all-time series 53-24, the Bulldogs have held the edge in recent history, winning seven of the last eight games. Among those wins for the Bulldogs was the season opener last February when Asheville came away with the 10-4 victory.

How to Follow – As mentioned previously, Tuesday's game will air on ESPN+. Live stats will also be available for following HERE.
