Women's Basketball earns 63-43 win over Charleston Southern in regular season finale

02.26.2022 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE N.C. – UNC Asheville Women's Basketball emerged victorious 63-43 over Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon, and gained much needed momentum heading into the Big South Tournament.
With momentum in hand, Asheville has their path set to postseason glory in Charlotte, as the No. 11 seeded Bulldogs will play Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. against the No. 6 seed North Carolina A&T Aggies to open the Big South Tournament.

Three Bulldogs posted double-digit scoring efforts, in which Kai Carter led all scorers with 20 points and seven rebounds. Nadiria Evans was right behind Carter, collecting a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double, her third on the year. Jordaynia Ivie added 12 points to the tally, and Faith Adams put together an 8-point, 5 assist game.

Defense truly led to offense for the Bulldogs as well, totaling 21 points off of turnovers to only two from Charleston Southern. "Our players really bought into our game plan and what we were trying to do," said head coach Honey Brown post game. "Even though Nadiria had 17, it wasn't one of her better shooting days, and I'm happy that the rest of the team was able to pick that up."

The Bulldogs got off to a quick start in the first quarter, jumping out to a 5-0 lead and holding that five-point lead throughout the first quarter. The Buccaneers answered in the second with a run of their own, eventually gaining a 17-16 lead just under two minutes into the quarter. That would be the last time CSU would hold the lead however, as Asheville closed the half on a 18-6 run and pushed the lead to 34-23 at the half.

The start of the third was almost deja-vu for the Bulldogs, as Charleston Southern opened the quarter on a 12-4 run to cut into the Asheville lead at 38-35. It was a timely and-1 from Evans however in her last game in Kimmel Arena that answered the Buccaneer run, and a point in the game the Bulldogs would never look back from.

"A few times in games we've had lulls, and in some games its cost us leads," Brown said. "We wanted to stay intense the whole game today, or pick up our intensity when it was falling and not let teams go on big runs, and I thought we did a better job of that today."Asheville would hold Charleston Southern scoreless for the final six minutes of the third quarter and close the game on a 23-8 run, and is the first time since defeating Warren Wilson in early December that the Bulldogs won all four quarters of the game.

"You want to have momentum, and you want your players to be excited and have some confidence," Brown stated. "But I think getting this win today, especially in front of their families and home fans, I think it meant a lot because we've lost a few close ones lately."

The Bulldogs finish the regular season 8-21 overall and 3-15 in Big South play. Hotel and ticket information is available through this link.
