Tennessee upends Asheville Wednesday in non-conference action

02.23.2022 | Baseball

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 15 Tennessee upended the UNC Asheville baseball team by a score of 16-1 Wednesday evening in non-conference action.

As a team, Asheville notched four hits against the Tennessee pitching staff. Dylan Bacot had his best game as a Bulldog to date, reaching base three times thanks to a 2-for-3 effort and a walk. Kevin Catrine launched his first home run as a Bulldog in the ninth to account for Asheville's lone run of the game. Fermin Osio accounted for the other hit for the Bulldogs with a double.

On the pitching side, nine different Bulldogs took the mound on Wednesday. Justin Honeycutt got the starting nod and allowed one run on two hits in his lone inning of action. The trio of Blake Little, JP Perez, and Jacob Williams all turned in scoreless appearances against the Volunteers, with Little and Williams striking out a pair of hitters in their respective innings of work.

Tennessee showed why it was ranked in the national polls early in Wednesday's matchup. The Volunteers scored at least one run in six of the first seven innings and tallied multiple runs in four of those frames, powered in part to five home runs. The Volunteers were equally as dominant on the mound as it racked up a total of 18 strikeouts against Asheville hitters and yielded just one run.

Even with the strikeout numbers racking up for the Volunteers, the Bulldogs did threaten with runners on base in multiple innings on Wednesday. However, Asheville did not breakthrough until the ninth inning solo home run from Catrine put the Bulldogs on the board.

The Bulldogs, now 0-4 on the season, will open their home schedule this weekend when they host Niagara for a four-game series. The first and fourth games will occur at Greenwood Field on Friday (3 p.m.) and Sunday (Noon), while the middle two games will take place at the Big League Camp facility in Marion, N.C. on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
