Last Time Out
Asheville battled rival Winthrop last Saturday at Kimmel Arena, but came up just short (84-79) due to Patrick Good's 20-point second-half effort. With Drew Pember and Tajion Jones playing limited minutes because of foul trouble, LJ Thorpe carried the Bulldog offense, matching his season-high with 28 points while dishing out four assists and grabbing three rebounds.
Starting Fast
How the Bulldogs play in the first half has been a good indication of how the game will end, going 15-1 when leading at the break and 0-11 when trailing. In league games, Asheville is outscoring opponents by 43 points in the second half, but by just 25 in the first. Taking care of the ball has also been key to the success of the Bulldogs, going 11-1 when committing fewer turnovers and 13-2 when winning the points-off-turnovers battle.
Series History
The Runnin' Bulldogs lead the all-time series 34-21, having won eight of the last 10 and two in a row. Last season, when the two sides met in Gardner-Webb last season, Asheville was able to claim the first of the back-to-backs (79-75) to register the first win in the Morrell era.
Scouting the Runnin' Bulldogs
Gardner-Webb has won seven of its last eight entering Wednesday, and is 10-3 in Paul Porter Arena this season. Terry Lance and D'Maurian Williams are each averaging 14.1 points per game on the season and over 14.0 points in conference contests. Williams was the catalyst in January's matchup, scoring 21 points on 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range, grabbing six rebounds in the process. Like Asheville, Gardner-Webb defends the three-point line at a high level, holding teams to just 28.3 percent shooting on the season, including limiting the Bulldogs to 6-of-21 shooting (26.1%) in the first matchup this season. The Runnin' Bulldogs' defense is not limited to the three ball, limiting conference foes to a league-best 38.7 percent shooting from the floor while ranking second in rebounds per game (35.3).
