BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech launched five home runs and totaled 22 hits to fuel its 17-3 win over the UNC Asheville baseball team Friday afternoon in both teams' season opener.
Virginia Tech's offense wasted no time scoring the first runs of the 2022 campaign as the Hokies touched up Asheville starter Ryan Douglas for three runs in the first inning. VT added four more runs in the second and tagged on single runs in the third and fourth to stake its starter Griffin Green to a 9-0 lead after four innings.
The nine runs of support proved more than enough for Green as he shut down the Bulldog offense tossing five scoreless innings to begin his sophomore campaign. After Green sat the Bulldogs down in the top of the fifth, the Hokies put the game out of reach in the bottom half of the inning, scoring eight two-out runs to build their lead to 17-0.
After his five shutout innings, Green turned it over to the Hokie bullpen in the sixth. That was when the Bulldog bats started to show some life. Grayson Preslar led the frame off with a single to left field. A wild pitch bumped Preslar up to second base before Ty Kaufman had a productive out, pushing his teammate up to third base to give Asheville its best scoring chance of the game to that point. Dominic Freeberger then drove Preslar in with a ringing single to center to get Asheville on the scoreboard.
The Bulldogs got their other two runs in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Kaden Smith got things started with a walk before the next two hitters were retired. Fermin Osio, who singled earlier in the game, was hit by a pitch to give Asheville a pair of base runners with two outs. Another pinch-hitter Kevin Catrine drove in Smith for Asheville's second run, and Kaufman drove in Osio to finish off the scoring on the day for the Bulldogs.
On the pitching side, Douglas took the loss after allowing eight runs on nine hits in 2.1 innings of work. The tandem of JP Perez and Jay Allmer gave Asheville some solid relief work to keep Virginia Tech off the scoreboard for the last three innings. Perez worked 2.1 innings and struck out three hitters, while Allmer tossed a scoreless eighth inning.
Asheville and Virginia Tech will resume their series on Saturday afternoon. The first pitch of game two is set for 2 p.m. There will be no stream of tomorrow's game, but you can follow live stats for updates HERE.
