ROCK HILL, S.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team fell on the road at Winthrop on Saturday by a score of 75-54. With the loss, Asheville's overall record moves to 7-13, while its Big South mark dips to 2-7.
Asheville was led on Saturday by the tandem of Kai Carter and Nadiria Evans. Carter knocked down a season-high five 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 19 points. Evans, meanwhile, added 18 points of her own and was Asheville's leading distributor with four assists. Abigail Wilson added eight points and seven rebounds, while Mallory Bruce posted her second double-digit rebound game of her career with a team-high 11 rebounds.
The Bulldogs and Eagles seemed to match each other bucket for bucket early in Saturday's contest. Evans was doing the bulk of the scoring for Asheville in the opening minutes as she quickly scored eight of the team's first 11 points. With this fast start, Evans became just the fifth Bulldog ever to reach the 1,600-point milestone in their joining Shelia Ford (2,442 points), Kim Duncan (1,975 points), Vicki Giffin (1,703 points), and Trish Wyatt (1,606 points).
With Winthrop holding a slim 19-15 lead after 10 minutes of play, it seemed to find a different gear in the second quarter. The Eagles clamped down on Asheville's offense holding the Bulldogs to 19-percent shooting from the field in the frame. The offense for Winthrop, meanwhile, was able to build up a double-digit lead thanks in part to an 8-0 run in the second. Wilson netted the last six points of the half for the Bulldogs to get the deficit back down to single digits as the teams adjourned to the locker room for halftime.
In terms of shooting percentage, the Bulldogs seemed to find their rhythm when the action resumed in the third quarter. Asheville knocked down six of its 10 shots from the field in the stanza. However, nine turnovers by Bulldogs translated into nine points for Winthrop. Thanks to these added chances, Winthrop built its lead even more and led 58-40 heading to the fourth and final quarter.
Asheville got the Eagles' lead down to 13 in the final frame, but that's as close as it would get. Winthrop was an efficient 8-for-12 from the field in the final 10 minutes to close out the 75-54 victory.
Asheville will be back in action on Wednesday when it pays a visit to Campbell for another Big South matchup. Tip-off for that contest is set for 7 p.m. from Buies Creek, N.C.
