Volleyball hits the road for matches at Campbell and Hampton

09.30.2021 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team will hit the road for the first time in Big South play this weekend as it travels to Campbell and Hampton on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Friday's match is slated to get underway at 6 p.m., while Saturday's is set for a 4 p.m. first serve.

Last Time Out – Asheville was swept by High Point last Saturday in three sets (25-14, 25-12, 25-18) at the Justice Center. With the loss, the Bulldogs' record this season moves to 2-9 overall, and 0-2 in Big South play.

Grace nearing 1,400 – Senior setter Grace Volk is about to join an exclusive club in Asheville volleyball history as she needs just one more assist to become the 10th Bulldog ever to reach the 1,400-assist mark. Additionally, Volk has ranked among the top setters in the league this fall, ranking third in assists per set at 7.49.

Killin' It – A definite bright spot for Asheville's offense so far this fall has been the play of Molly Hackett and Peyton McClinton. Each player is averaging 3.03 kills per set, which is tied for the third-most in the Big South. Furthermore, Asheville is the lone team in the conference to have multiple players rank in the top five in that category.

On the Road Again - After spending nearly the first month of the season away from home, the Bulldogs will once again venture out on the road this weekend. Asheville will be looking for its first true road win this fall. During the 2021 spring season, Asheville went 4-4 in road matches with victories over Gardner-Webb (twice) and Presbyterian (twice).

About the Opponents – Campbell enters Friday's match with the Bulldogs playing arguably its best volleyball of the young season. The Camels have reeled off five straight victories that include wins over Charleston Southern (3-0) and Presbyterian (3-1) on the road. A key in Campbell's success lately has been its balance both offensively and defensively. Campbell not only has a trio of players with more than 100 kills, but it also has held its opponents to the second-lowest hitting percentage in the Big South (.164).

Hampton, meanwhile, holds an overall record of 1-8 and a 0-2 mark in conference play. Hampton's lone win this season came against Norfolk State in five sets back on August 31. A strength for the Pirates has been their ability on the block as they are just one of two teams in the Big South to have more than one player averaging more than one block per set.

Series Rewind vs. Opponents – Historically, the Bulldogs have held the edge against both Campbell and Hampton. Against the Camels, Asheville is 19-11 all-time, but Campbell has won the last four matchups. As for the Hampton series, the Bulldogs have won five of the seven meetings, but they will be looking for their first-ever win on the Pirates' home floor on Saturday.
