BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team battled but ultimately fell on the road to Campbell (25-19, 25-14, 14-25, 25-20) Friday evening in Big South action.
Stat Standouts – Molly Hackett led the way for Asheville Friday evening totaling a match-high 20 kills to go with 10 digs. It marked the second time in Hackett's collegiate career that she has totaled 20-plus kills in a match. Brandy Kishbaugh tallied a season-high 16 digs to lead the Bulldog defense, while Lexy Cole hit an efficient .389 with nine kills. Finally, Grace Volk became the 10th Bulldog in program history to reach the 1,400-assist plateau on Friday. Volk, who needed just one more assist to reach 1,400 entering the match, finished the evening with 43 assists.
Set 1 – The opening frame of Friday's match was a highly competitive one. Campbell and Asheville were tied at 12 different points in the first set alone. Following kills from Hackett and Nina Finderle, the Bulldogs took a 17-15 lead on the Camels. Campbell, however, closed the first set on a 10-2 run to finish off a 25-19 victory.
Set 2 – Perhaps riding the momentum from its sizable run to close out the first set, Campbell's offense kept rolling in the second. The Camels hit a blistering .640 with 17 kills on 25 attacks in the second set. With Campbell's offense clicking so well, it went on to take the second, 25-14, and a 2-0 lead in the match overall.
Set 3 – In a complete reversal from the second set, the Bulldogs came out firing in the third. Collectively, Asheville attacked the Campbell defense at a .400 clip with 12 kills on 25 attempts. Hackett tallied six of her 20 kills on the night in the third to spearhead the Bulldog attack. Campbell's offense did not have an answer to Asheville's offense this time as the Bulldogs cruised to a 25-14 win to force a fourth set.
Set 4 – Campbell got off to a fast start in the fourth, scoring four of the first five points to put the pressure on the Bulldogs early. Asheville kept battling back, however, and eventually tied the score at 18. Facing a possible fifth set, Campbell's offense stepped up and totaled six kills in its next seven points to finish off Friday's match, 25-19.
Note from Coach – "It was a tough match tonight against a very good Campbell team," said Head Coach Frederico Santos. "We started the match with very good composure, good side out rate, and focus. We made some errors to fall behind in the first set. In the third, we put together the performance we know we are capable of, and in the fourth set, we fought a good battle. I am happy we received a good lift off the bench tonight, which is a great confidence builder for all of us. The team is working very hard and motivated. Tomorrow is a new day, and we are going to fight with all we have."
Next Up – The Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday when they visit Hampton for another Big South matchup. The start time for that match is scheduled for 4 p.m.
