Bulldogs knock off Hampton in four sets to secure first Big South win

10.02.2021 | Women's Volleyball

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team notched its first Big South victory of the season Saturday as it downed Hampton in four sets (25-22, 25-13, 22-25, 25-22) on the road. With Saturday's victory, Asheville improves its record to 3-10 overall and 1-3 in league action.

Stat Standouts – Asheville had several players have standout statistical performances in Saturday's victory. Peyton McClinton was one of those Bulldogs totaling 21 kills to go with 11 digs. Molly Hackett (14 kills) and Kat Cruser (11 kills) also finished the four-set contest with double-figure kill totals. Grace Volk set up those three hitters and the rest of Asheville's offense with 45 assists against Hampton. Defensively, Brandy Kishbaugh led the charge with 15 digs, which was one shy of her career-high.

Set 1 –
There was very little room for error in the opening set of Saturday's match. The score was tied at 11 different points in the frame, and both teams took turns holding on to the lead. The deciding swing in the first set occurred with the score tied at 21. Asheville's Nina Finderle, Cruser, Hackett all tallied kills down the stretch to help the Bulldogs go on a 4-1 run to finish off a 25-22 set win.

Set 2 –
The second set was all Bulldogs. Asheville jumped on Hampton early and often as it scored 12 of the first 15 points in the frame. As a team, the Bulldogs hit .400 in the second with 12 kills in 25 attempts. With Asheville's offense clicking so well and the early deficit, the Pirates struggled to keep up and the Bulldogs to the second frame, 25-13.

Set 3 –
Facing a potential three-set defeat, Hampton came out playing much better in the third. Hampton, which tallied the first point and never trailed, built their lead to as many as six points. Asheville made a late rally to get the deficit down to two at 24-22, but Hampton notched a kill to move the match to a fourth set, 25-22.

Set 4 –
Much like the first set, the two teams jostled for position in what proved to be the final frame of the match. McClinton saved her best for last as she totaled six of her 21 kills in the fourth to spearhead the Bulldog attack. Asheville also received seven total kills from the tandem of Hackett and Cruser to help vary its offense. With the Bulldogs attacking from many different directions, they won the fourth, 25-22.

Note from Coach – "
A great win for our team under difficult conditions, but we were determined to succeed and got out to a strong start winning the first two sets," said Head Coach Frederico Santos. "There was a little loss of rhythm in the third, but we came out more determined than ever to get the win. Congratulations to the girls who are fighting every day in practice and in games to perform to the best of their abilities and giving their all for the team."

Next Up
 – Asheville will aim to get a winning streak started next Friday and Saturday as they welcome Gardner-Webb and Winthrop to the Justice Center for a pair of Big South clashes. The start times for those two matches are set for 6 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
