ASHEVILLE, N.C. – After one of its longest road trips of the season, the UNC Asheville volleyball team will return home to the Justice Center this weekend when it hosts Gardner-Webb on Friday and Winthrop on Saturday. The start times for these two matches are set for 6 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively, on ESPN+.
Last Time Out – Asheville tallied its first Big South win of the season last Saturday as it knocked off Hampton in four sets (25-22, 25-13, 22-25, 25-22). The Bulldogs boosted their overall record to 3-10 and 1-3 in conference play with the win.
More from Molly – Senior Molly Hackett has been one of Asheville's most consistent players during the 2021 campaign, and she showed it again last weekend at Campbell and Hampton. Overall, Hackett totaled 34 kills on 71 attempts (.352 hitting percentage), 19 digs, and totaled 36.5 points scored in those two matches. Furthermore, with her point totals of 21 and 15.5 against the Camels and Pirates, Hackett has scored 15 or more points on five different occasions this season.
Boost by Brandy – Freshman Brandy Kishbaugh served as the Bulldogs' libero for the first time in her collegiate career last weekend at Campbell and Hampton. Kishbaugh fared well, totaling 16 digs against Campbell before tallying 15 in Saturday's victory of Hampton. With those two double-digit dig efforts, Kishbaugh has now notched double-digit dig totals in four straight matches.
October Omen – So far in October, the Bulldogs sport a 1-1 record. Asheville hopes its recent success in October continues this time around as the team has posted a .500 record or better in three of the last four Octobers, including a 6-3 mark back in 2018.
About the Opponents – After winning just four matches during the spring season, Gardner-Webb has enjoyed a rebound campaign so far this fall. The Runnin' Bulldogs will come to Asheville with a 3-1 record in Big South matches and a 6-8 record overall. Mikah McIntosh is a player to watch for Gardner-Webb, who ranks second in the Big South and 55th nationally, averaging 4.69 digs per set.
Much like Gardner-Webb, Winthrop has played much better in the fall compared to the spring. The Eagles sit tied atop the Big South standings with an undefeated 4-0 record and a 9-5 mark overall. Winthrop is a balanced team as it ranks top-10 nationally in both digs per set (4th – 18.85) and attacks per set (6th – 39.96).
Series Rewind vs. Opponents – Asheville picked up two victories against both Gardner-Webb and Winthrop during the spring campaign. Overall, the Bulldogs, who have won the last six matches between the two teams, are 26-11 all-time against the Runnin' Bulldogs. Winthrop, meanwhile, holds a 41-33 edge on Asheville, but it is just 8-20 in matches contested at the Justice Center.
Admission & CoVID Protocols - Admission to both matches this weekend will be free! The same will be true for the remainder of the team's 2021 schedule. The concession stand will be closed, but we will have food trucks (Sweet Cheesus – both days, Daddy D's soul food – Friday, Bridge & Tunnel, Buggy Pops – Saturday) in attendance. Due to the prevalence of CoVID-19 in the greater Buncombe County area, UNC Asheville Athletics is asking spectators to abide by the following:
