Bulldogs Complete Perfect Weekend with Third Straight Sweep

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team closed out the Blue Ridge Volleyball Classic in dominant fashion Sunday morning, defeating Jacksonville State in straight sets, 25-22, 25-23, 25-21, at the Harrah's Cherokee Center – Asheville.
Sunday's victory marked Asheville's third consecutive sweep, as the Bulldogs finished the Blue Ridge Volleyball Classic with a perfect 3-0 record without dropping a set. Asheville improves to 6-1 on the season.
The Bulldogs finished the match with 37 kills, 34 assists, seven service aces and six total blocks. Jacksonville State recorded 31 kills and was held to a .120 attack percentage for the match.
Addie Brookbank led Asheville offensively with 11 kills, while Sarah Wadsworth followed with eight. Albertine van der Goot added six kills and finished with a team-best .267 attack percentage.
Elise Jensen and Olivia Callipo split setting duties, recording 16 and 15 assists, respectively. Jensen also led the Bulldogs with three service aces, while Lydia Pate and Wadsworth each added two. Izzy Perkins led the defensive effort with 10 digs. Pate led Asheville's defensive efforts at the net with a solo block and three block assists.
Asheville used an early run to take control of the opening set. With the Bulldogs leading 9-7, Asheville rattled off six consecutive points behind Jensen's serve to extend its advantage to 15-7. Jacksonville State battled back late and trimmed the deficit to two at 24-22, but van der Goot ended the set with a kill to give Asheville the 25-22 victory.
The second set remained tight throughout. Jacksonville State held an early advantage before Asheville worked its way back and tied the frame at 13. The Bulldogs moved ahead 15-14 following a Jensen service ace and later built a 23-20 advantage. The Gamecocks pulled within one at 24-23, but Wadsworth closed the set with a kill to send Asheville into the third frame ahead 2-0.
The third set featured 11 ties as neither side was able to create much separation early. With the score even at 16, Asheville scored three straight points to move ahead 19-16. Jacksonville State responded to tie the set at 19, but the Bulldogs answered once again. Brookbank broke the tie with a kill before Cadence Nichols followed with another to give Asheville a 21-19 lead.
Jacksonville State got within one at 21-20, but Asheville scored four of the final five points. Wadsworth and Callipo each recorded kills during the closing stretch before Pate put the Bulldogs at match point. A Pate and van der Goot block sealed the 25-21 victory and Asheville's third sweep of the weekend.
With the win, Asheville finishes its three-match stay at the Blue Ridge Volleyball Classic without dropping a set and extends its winning streak to five matches.
Asheville returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 8, as the Bulldogs travel to Durham, N.C., to face North Carolina Central at 6 p.m.
