Hackett and McClinton lead Bulldogs past North Carolina Central, 3-0

09.11.2021 | Women's Volleyball

ELON, N.C. – Seniors Molly Hackett (18 kills, 10 digs) and Peyton McClinton (14 kills, 12 digs) both posted double-doubles and logged hitting percentages higher than .400 to help lead the UNC Asheville volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of North Carolina Central (25-15, 25-20, 25-17) Saturday afternoon.

Stat Standouts – In addition to the performances from Hackett and McClinton, Asheville also received stellar outings from a few other players. Setting up the duo was setter Grace Volk finished the three-set contest with 33 assists, eight digs, and four kills herself. Defensively, the tandem of Anna Skryd and Ona Elkins joined Hackett and McClinton with double-digit dig totals with 10 digs apiece.

Set 1 –
Asheville jumped on NCCU right away to begin Saturday's contest as it scored nine of the first 12 points. A major reason for the burst of early offense was the play of Hackett. She finished the opening frame with eight kills on 14 attacks with no errors (.571 hitting percentage). With Hackett and the rest of the Bulldogs playing well, Asheville went on to take the first frame, 25-15.

Set 2 –
In the most tightly contested set of Saturday's match, the score was tied at five different points, with three different lead changes. Much like Hackett did in the first, McClinton took over in the second racking up seven kills on 18 attacks to pace the Bulldog offense. Defensively, Elkins kept some key rallies alive finishing with six digs in the stanza. Despite the play of McClinton, Elkins, and the rest of the Bulldogs, NCCU trailed by just three points late in the frame. Asheville, however, was able to hold on to take the second, 25-20.

Set 3 –
The Bulldogs kept things rolling in the third on their way to clinching their second victory of the fall season. Asheville attacked at a .361 clip as a team, with five different players registering kills in the third. The balanced and efficient attack was enough for the Bulldogs to take their third straight set from the Eagles, 25-17.

Note from Coach –
"Today was a great win for our team and a fantastic performance," said Head Coach Frederico Santos. "The team played well offensively as well as defensively. I am happy for the team because they have been working hard to earn a win, and they deserved it!"

Next Up –
Asheville will return to action next Friday when it visits Clemson, S.C., for a pair of matches. First, the Bulldogs will take on Clemson at noon before taking on regional rival East Tennessee State at 4:30 p.m.
