ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team will wrap up its non-conference schedule on Friday when they travel to Clemson, South Carolina for a pair of matches. Asheville will take on Clemson at noon before closing out the day by facing regional rival East Tennessee State at 4:30 p.m.
Last Time Out – At last weekend's Aggie/Phoenix Volley for Unity tournament, the Bulldogs went 1-1. After falling in three sets to Elon (16-25, 15-25, 17-25), Asheville bounced back to upend North Carolina Central in a three-set sweep (25-15, 25-20, 25-17). With those results, Asheville's record stands at 2-5 on the fall 2021 season.
Déjà vu for the senior duo – Much like earlier this season, seniors Molly Hackett and Peyton McClinton were named to the All-Tournament team following the Aggie/Phoenix Volley for Unity tournament last weekend. Hackett and McClinton, who also earned All-Tournament team honors following the season-opening Wildcat Classic hosted by Davidson, rank first and second on the team in kills (73 and 69) and second and third on the squad in digs (65 and 63).
More on Molly – A key reason why Hackett was named to her second All-Tournament team this season was her play in Saturday's victory over NCCU. The Frankfort, Illinois native racked up 18 kills, attacked at a .421 clip on 38 attempts to go with 10 digs. It was her second double-double of the season and her 18 kills marked the most by any Big South player in a three-set match this season.
Bounce Back for the Bulldogs – The three-set win over North Carolina Central not only came at a key time, but it was also one of the team's more complete performances in recent memory. The triumph snapped a four-match losing skid, and the Bulldog offense logged a hitting percentage of .296. The .296 hitting percentage was the team's highest in a match since November 8, 2019, vs. Gardner-Webb (.315).
About the Opponents – Clemson has jumped out to a 5-3 start this fall under first-year Head Coach Jackie Simpson Kerr. A critical part of the Tigers' early success has been the play of Kaylee Martin and Camryn Hannah, as both players have already reached the 80-kill plateau this season.
ETSU, meanwhile, will come to Clemson toting a 3-5 record. A couple of players to watch for the Buccaneers Friday will be the duo of Taylor Roberts and Josannah Vazquez. Roberts ranks fourth in the Southern Conference in digs per set (4.23), while Vazquez is fifth in the SoCon for kills per set (3.46).
Series Rewind vs. Opponents – Asheville has not seen much of Clemson and ETSU recently. The Bulldogs last faced off against Clemson in 2014, and they haven't taken on ETSU since 2012. Clemson is 6-0 all-time against the Bulldogs, with all six meetings occurring on the Tigers' home floor. ETSU is 23-10 versus Asheville and brings a six-match winning streak against the Bulldogs into Friday's match.
How to Follow – Both matches on Friday will have live stats available for following, and those individual links can be found on the volleyball team's schedule page. Only the match vs. Clemson will be streamed, and it can be seen on ACC Network Extra.
