Bulldogs drop a pair of matches at Clemson Friday

09.17.2021 | Women's Volleyball

CLEMSON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team dropped a pair of 3-0 decisions to Clemson (25-8, 25-15, 28-26) and East Tennessee State (25-12, 25-22, 25-19) to close out the non-conference portion of its schedule Friday afternoon.

Clemson Recap – After Clemson won the first two sets fairly decisively (25-8, 25-15), the Bulldogs bounced back in a major way in the third and final frame. The Tigers led by as many as six points at 16-10 before an 8-2 run from Asheville tied the score at 18. Following that sizable run, the Bulldogs kept the pressure on Clemson the rest of the way to forcing a set point in their favor, 26-25. However, Clemson regrouped and rattled off three straight points to finalize the 3-0 victory.

Individually, the Bulldogs were led by the tandem of Peyton McClinton and Molly Hackett. McClinton totaled 11 kills, while Hackett added 10 kills to spearhead the offensive attack for the Bulldogs.

ETSU Recap – Following a sluggish start that led to an ETSU 25-12 win in the opening frame, the Bulldogs regrouped and put together a pair of competitive stanzas in the second and third. In the second, the score was tied at 15 different points, and there were six lead changes as well. The last lead change was fueled by a 5-1 run in the middle of the frame that put ETSU on top 21-16. Asheville chipped away to get the deficit back within two points, but the Buccaneers held on for the 25-22 win.

Asheville put together its best offensive outing in the third. Attacking at a .275 clip, the Bulldogs had three-plus kills from Lexy Cole, Hackett, and Nina Finderle. ETSU's offense was slightly more efficient, however, racking up 17 kills on 41 attempts on its way to finishing off the match, 25-19.

Cole ended up leading the Bulldogs with seven kills with a solo block and a block assist vs. ETSU. Anna Skryd also had a nice outing defensively, notching 11 digs in the three-set contest.

Note from Coach – "It was a tough weekend for us, but we learned that we can compete with the best and perform at a high level," said Head Coach Frederico Santos. "Now we turn our attention to conference play, and we start to prepare next week."

Next Up – The Bulldogs will open their Big South and home schedules next Friday as they welcome league newcomer North Carolina A&T to the Justice Center. The first serve for that matchup is scheduled for 6 p.m.
