ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team will begin both its Big South and home schedules this weekend at the Justice Center. First, Asheville will play host to league newcomer North Carolina A&T on Friday at 6 p.m. before welcoming defending Big South champion High Point to the High Country for a match at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Both matches can be seen on ESPN+.
Last Time Out – Asheville dropped a pair of 3-0 decisions to Clemson (25-8, 25-15, 28-26) and East Tennessee State (25-12, 25-22, 25-19) last Friday as a part of the Big Orange Bash hosted by Clemson. With the pair of losses, the Bulldogs saw their record dip to 2-7 on the season.
Dynamic Duo – The tandem of Molly Hackett and Peyton McClinton has been a key cog in Asheville's offensive attack this fall. McClinton (3.43 P/S) and Hackett (3.40 P/S) rank seventh and eighth, respectively, in points per set among players in the Big South. Asheville joins Winthrop and High Point as the only other teams in the league to have multiple players rank in the top eight in that category.
Grace moving up the charts – With a stellar weekend against North Carolina A&T and High Point, senior setter Grace Volk could move up another spot on the program's all-time assist list. Volk, who currently has 1,342 assists as a Bulldog, needs 65 more to move into ninth place all-time, surpassing former Bulldog Hallie Morse (2010-11) with 1,406 assists.
About the Opponents – North Carolina A&T (8-4) and High Point (8-5) are off to good starts in 2021 as they are the only Big South teams that sport records over the .500 mark entering this weekend's action. The Aggies will come to Asheville riding a three-match winning streak as they notched victories over Wofford, George Mason, and Virginia Tech last weekend. A player to watch for A&T will be Edie Brewer. Brewer is coming off a week where she was named the Virginia Tech Invitational MVP and the Big South Player of the Week.
High Point, meanwhile, will look to defend its Big South championship that it won last spring with an undefeated 16-0 record. The Panthers have a balanced attack as they have a trio of players that have scored 130 points or more through the first month of the season.
Series Rewind vs. Opponents – Asheville has the edge against both the Aggies and Panthers historically. The Bulldogs are 17-3 all-time against North Carolina A&T, including a perfect 9-0 mark in Asheville. High Point has won eight straight against the Bulldogs, but the latter still holds a 32-17 advantage overall in the series.
Admission & CoVID Protocols – Admission to both matches this weekend will be free! The same will be true for the remainder of the team's 2021 schedule. Due to the prevalence of CoVID-19 in the greater Buncombe County area, UNC Asheville Athletics is asking spectators to abide by the following:
