Women’s soccer edged out 2-1 at Western Carolina
08.22.2021 | Women's Soccer
CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Despite a 10-save performance from goalkeeper Bronwyn Luitwieler and a second –half rally, the UNC Asheville women's soccer team came up just short at Western Carolina on Sunday night, falling to the Catamounts 2-1.
Western Carolina pulled in front in the first before Asheville's Taylor Gardner answered to open the second, before the Catamounts ultimately scored the game winner in the 74th. With the win, the Bulldogs drop to 0-2 while the Catamounts move to 1-1.
"A real gutsy second-half team performance," said UNC Asheville Head Coach Andy McNab. "We had a couple of great chances to win the game. After a subpar first half, the character that was shown in the second half was important."
The Rundown
Western Carolina wasted little time applying pressure, earning a corner in the first minute before registering a pair of shots that were turned away by Luitwieler. In the 28th, UNC Asheville threatened, earning a corner kick and throw in. Freshman Daysha Chaney pushed the pace up the wing, but it was the Catamounts who would get on the board first when Riley Terry found Kirsten Hahn who made the score 1-0. Western Carolina nearly doubled the lead minutes later, but Luitwieler made a leaping save to keep the deficit at one at the break.
In the second, it was Asheville which came out of the gates firing, as freshman Taylor Gardner ripped a shot past Ashlee Owens to equalize 1-1. The first goal of Gardner's career came just 37 seconds into the half. Just seconds after Luitwieler came up with a kick save in the 74th, the Catamounts capitalized off the corner as Natalie McNally made the score 2-1.
While the Catamounts aimed to put the game away, Luitweieer continued to respond and keep the Bulldogs just a goal down. With less than two minutes to play, Luitwieler cut down another breakaway, but the Bulldogs ran out of time, dropping the contest 2-1.
