Women’s Soccer falls at Furman 2-0

08.26.2021 | Women's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville Women's Soccer team visited Southern Conference-favorite Furman on Thursday evening, falling to the Paladins 2-0.

Furman, which was selected to finish first in the Southern Conference Preseason Poll, capitalized in the opening minutes of the first and second half to double up the Bulldogs 2-0. Courtney O'Malley had a strong showing in net, collecting five saves while Gillian Oyos registered two shots on goal for the Bulldogs.

"Despite the result, we were always in the game against a quality team that made the NCAA tournament this past spring," said Head Coach Andy McNab. "We are taking positive steps forward and hopefully the players can be rewarded for that soon."

The Game at a Glance

  • Furman strikes early in both first and second half, totals seven shots on goal
  • Oyos registers a pair of shots on frame
  • Asheville totals five shots, four on goal
  • O'Malley picks up five saves

How it Happened
The Paladins were able to strike right away, getting a goal from Jasmine Green in the third minute of the contest. Oyos broke through in the fifth and forced Addison Corn to make her first save of the evening. Furman would earn three corners before peppering a quartet of shots with less than 15 minutes to play in the half. The Paladins continued to press before the break, but took a 1-0 lead into half.

The second unfolded much like the first, with Furman's Hayley Foster finding the back of the net just minutes into the second. In the 54th, Alice Walker fired a shot on frame that was collected by Nora Sampson. The Bulldogs tried to pull one back in the 74th as Taylor Gardner pushed a shot wide. Despite the best efforts of the Paladins, O'Malley kept the score 2-0, saving a one-on-one before tipping a shot over the crossbar as time winded down.

What's Next
After three games on the road to start the season, the Bulldogs will have their home opener on Sunday, welcoming ETSU to Greenwood Field for a 2:00 p.m. kick.
