Women’s Soccer battles, falls to ETSU 1-0 in double overtime
08.29.2021 | Women's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville Women's Soccer team had its home opener on Sunday, battling ETSU into double overtime, before coming up just short 1-0.
After failing to register a shot in the first half, Asheville totaled 11 in the second, but could not break through. With the score knotted after 100 minutes of play, ETSU's Sydney Somogyi was able to score off a corner kick to lift the Bucs to the win.
"I thought in the first half, it took some time adjusting and settling into the conditions," said Head Coach Andy McNab. "The second-half performance was very, very good. We had several chances, hit the crossbar, hit two off the post and in games like this you probably need to finish one of those. I think we need to recognize this was a good performance and a step forward."
The Game at a Glance
- Bulldogs register season-high 13 shots
- Gillian Oyos, Daysha Chaney, Alice Walker register shots on net
- Bronwyn Luitwieler picks up five saves
- Asheville outshoots ETSU 13-12 in second half and overtime(s)
How it Happened
ETSU was the first to create a chance in the ninth, firing a shot wide before earning a pair of corners. In the 26th, Andjela Kricak forced Luitwieler to make a save to her left, keeping the score nil-nil. Neither team would threaten again until the Bucs had a shot and corner in the 42nd, but did not convert.
In the second half, Madison Carter ripped a shot that pinged the crossbar for the first scoring chance of the day by Asheville. ETSU responded with four shots and two corners, before the Bulldogs reeled off four straight shots and a corner, nearly scoring when Ava Nkadi hit the right post. In the 82nd, it was déjà vu, this time with Lindi Clark ringing the left post as the two teams went to extra time.
The Bucs had two corner kicks in the first overtime and Madison Carter ripped a shot high as the sides went into double overtime. The persistence of ETSU paid off, getting two corners, the second of which led to a goal when Kendall King flicked a loose ball to Somogyi in a crowded box to score the game winner.
What's Next
The Bulldogs remain home, hosting Elon on Thursday. Kick is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and can be streamed on ESPN+.
"We're playing a very good Elon team Thursday, so how do we now switch to that mindset to get ready for that game?" McNab said. "If we perform like we did in the second half, we'll be in the game. No doubt about that. It's just about showing up and doing the work from now until Thursday."
