Baseball Hits the Road for Three at Winthrop

04.08.2021 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team will be back in action this weekend as it travels to Winthrop for a three-game Big South series. Asheville and Winthrop will play a doubleheader on Friday before playing a single contest on Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled to be thrown at 2 p.m. each day.

Probable Pitching Matchups
Game 1: Ryan Douglas (AVL) vs. Tyler Jones (WIN)
Game 2: Jacob Edwards (AVL) vs. Daniel Blair (WIN)
Game 3: Kole Harris (AVL) vs. Macklin Ohs (WIN)

Last Time Out – The Bulldogs played in their longest game since 2016 on Tuesday as they fell to Presbyterian in 14 innings, 5-4. Asheville's record moved to 8-15 overall and 7-11 in league play with the loss.

One Away –
Senior Brandon Lankford launched a solo home run Tuesday at PC, which brings him within one of the program's all-time home run record. Lankford, who has homered in two of the last three games, ranks second in the Big South with six long balls and is second among active Division I players with 41 career home runs.

Write it in Pen
 – Asheville has a few players on its roster that have been dependable so much so that you could almost write their respective names on the lineup card with a pen. First, Jacob Edwards has started seven games on the mound for Asheville. Edwards' seven starts are tied for second in the nation. Dominic Freeberger, who has seen time at four different defensive positions, has batted in the No. 2 spot in Asheville's batting order in all 23 games. Furthermore, Freeberger has reached base in each of the last 16 contests.

About Winthrop
 – Winthrop enters this weekend's series looking to snap a four-game losing skid. The Eagles, who are 8-11 overall and 5-6 in conference play, dropped four straight contests to Campbell, including a 28-11 loss Tuesday at home. A strength for Winthrop through the first month-plus of the season has been its ability to get on-base. As a team, the Eagles have an on-base percentage of .375 and have a pair of players that rank top 100 in the country in that category in Ty Hooks (68th - .491) and Luke Hannum (96th - .481).

Series Rewind vs. Winthrop
 – The Eagles hold the historical edge over the Bulldogs, winning 33 of the 41 meetings since the start of 2005. Winthrop owns a seven-game winning streak against Asheville in Rock Hill, S.C. dating back to 2014. Asheville's last victory over the Eagles came on April 12, 2019, by 12-2 at Greenwood Field.
