Presbyterian Outlasts Bulldogs in 14 innings, 5-4
04.06.2021 | Baseball
CLINTON, S.C. – Presbyterian knocked off the UNC Asheville baseball team in a 14-inning game Tuesday afternoon by a score of 5-4. The 14-inning game is the longest game played by the Bulldogs since 2016.
After Presbyterian scored the first run of the game in the second, the Bulldogs answered back in the fourth. Brandon Lankford (hit by pitch) and Chris Troost (walk) both got on base to get things started. Justin Honeycutt laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the two runners into scoring position with one out. Asheville was able to cash in on this scoring chance as MJ Lucas picked up a single up the middle to score Lankford and Troost to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the contest.
The Blue Hose had several chances to either tie the game or pull in front through the middle innings. PC, which had at least one runner in every inning after the fourth, finally broke through to tie the game in the eighth, thanks to a pair of singles sandwiched around a sacrifice bunt.
Asheville promptly answered with a rally in the ninth from the bottom of its lineup. Kohl Abrams led things off with a single. Drew Bristow, who entered the game in the eighth, advanced Abrams on a groundout to put a runner in scoring position with one out. Ty Kaufman, who entered the at-bat hitting .412 with runners in scoring position this season, came through again to score Abrams to give the lead back to the Bulldogs, 3-2.
With a one-run lead to protect, the Bulldogs gave the ball to Dominic Freeberger. PC, which saw Freeberger twice last weekend at Greenwood Field, worked a pair of walks before a single up the middle drove in the tying run. Freeberger induced a flyout and then picked up a strikeout to put the Bulldogs in their second extra-inning game this spring.
It looked like PC may win the game in the 11th as two batters reached. After an intentional walk to set up a potential double play, the Blue Hose attempted to score the winning run with a sacrifice fly. Freeberger, who was playing his third position of the day, threw out the runner trying to score at the plate to force a 12th inning.
Lankford led off the 12th for Asheville and deposited a solo home run over the left-field wall to give the Bulldogs the lead back, 4-3. However, PC came back in its half of the 12th to tie the score again to force yet another inning.
Following a scoreless 13th, PC scratched across the winning run thanks to a pair of Bulldog errors to win the 14-inning marathon, 5-4. Tuesday's game is the longest Asheville has played in since it also played a 14-inning contest vs. ETSU on April 13, 2016.
