Asheville Mounts Late Rally but Drops Series Finale at High Point

03.07.2021 | Baseball

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team trailed by as many as seven runs Sunday in the series finale at High Point, but the Bulldogs mounted a rally in the late innings that had the go-ahead run at the plate before the Panthers closed out the 11-10 victory.

High Point's offense got to the Bulldog pitching staff early, scoring at least one run in each of the first six innings. Asheville, meanwhile, posted single runs in the second and third and two in the fifth. However, Asheville's big offensive inning occurred in the eighth, where the Bulldogs sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six times to get within one run heading to the ninth. As mentioned earlier, Asheville got the tying run on base, and the go-ahead run came to the plate in the ninth, but the Panther bullpen was able to get out of the jam and preserve the 11-10 win.

After hitting just one home run in their first seven games, the Bulldogs hit two Sunday. Brandon Lankford connected on his second solo home run in as many days, while Dominic Freeberger picked up his first home run of the 2021 campaign with a two-run shot in the fifth.

Freshman Michael Groves also posted a stellar game at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Overall, the Bulldogs had balance up and down their lineup as each hitter reached base at least once and seven of the nine picked up hits.

Ryan Douglas got the call to start Sunday's game for Asheville. Douglas, who was the pitcher of record for Asheville, worked the first two innings, allowed three runs on six hits. Overall, the Bulldogs used five pitchers Sunday. Kole Harris posted the best outing of the bunch tossing two scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth to give the Bulldogs a chance to make their comeback attempt.

Asheville will be back in action next weekend as it will visit Charleston Southern for another three-game series. The series will open with a single game Friday at 6 p.m. before the two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
