Baseball Hits the Road for Three at Charleston Southern

03.11.2021 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team will be back in action this weekend as it travels to the Palmetto State for a three-game series at Charleston Southern. Asheville and Charleston Southern will play once Friday (6 p.m.) before playing a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.) to close out the series. Each game of the series can be seen on ESPN+.

Probable Pitching Matchups
Game One – RHP Brett Johnson (AVL) vs. RHP RJ Petit (CSU)
Game Two – LHP Jacob Edwards (AVL) vs. RHP Krishna Raj (CSU)
Game Three – RHP Ryan Douglas (AVL) vs. RHP Daniel Padysak (CSU)

Last Time Out – Asheville rallied from a six-run deficit but came up just short in its final game at High Point on Sunday, 11-10. With the loss, Asheville's record moves to 1-7 on the 2021 season.

Lankford Goes Deep – Senior Brandon Lankford slugged a pair of solo home runs over the weekend at High Point. With the two long balls, Lankford needs just six more to become the school's all-time home run leader breaking the current record of 42 held by Brian Shehan.

Count on Kole – Senior Kole Harris has been one of the most dependable options out of the Bulldog bullpen through the first month of the season. In 2021, Harris has a 1.42 ERA in 6.1 innings pitched and has held opponents to a .143 batting average. Since the beginning of the shortened 2020 season, Harris, the program's all-time save leader with 17, has an ERA of 2.57 with 18 strikeouts in 14 innings pitched.

Fast Start from a Freshman – Freshman Michael Groves appeared in his first collegiate games in the three games at HPU and gave the Bulldog offense a definite lift. Groves, who picked up a pinch-hit RBI single in game one, served as the team's designated hitter in the final two games of the weekend set and collected a total of five hits in nine at-bats (.556 average) with four RBI.

About Charleston Southern – The Buccaneers enter this weekend's series with a 2-4 record. Charleston Southern won two of three games against Longwood last weekend. RJ Petit (Starting Pitcher) and Dylan Stewart (Freshman) were recognized as key contributors in the series win by collecting a pair of awards from the Big South.

Petit tossed a four-hit complete game shutout against Longwood on Friday. He utilized just 94 pitches, carried a perfect game into the fifth inning, and did not allow a runner past second base. Petit fanned six and did not issue a walk the entire game. Stewart, meanwhile, made his 2021 debut with RBI triples in each of his first two at-bats in CSU's 7-0 win over Longwood last Friday. He finished the three-game series with the Lancers batting .556 (5-9) with three runs scored and drove in four runs.

Series Rewind vs. Charleston Southern – The all-time series between Asheville and Charleston Southern dates back to 1988. Including the first meeting, the two programs have matched up a total of 94 times, with CSU coming out on top in 55 of those. The Bucs have won four of the last five against the Bulldogs, with Asheville's last win coming on April 20, 2019, at Greenwood Field, 11-4.
