03.05.2021 | Women's Volleyball
CLINTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team defeated Presbyterian in five sets (25-17, 24-26, 25-22, 22-25, 15-9) Friday evening in Big South action. The victory is Asheville's fourth straight, and it evens its record at 4-4.
Stat Standouts – Asheville had plenty of stellar statistical performances Friday. Peyton McClinton and Molly Hackett each had 18 kills, and the duo of Lexy Cole and Hannah Spicer both posted 14 kills. Grace Volk picked up her second double-double in as many days with 56 assists and 19 digs. Kasey West paced all Bulldog defenders with 25 digs, while McClinton (18 digs) and Ona Elkins (13 digs) helped the defense as well with double-figure dig totals Friday.
Set 1 – Riding the momentum it gained last night against PC, Asheville picked up the first three points of Friday's match. The Bulldogs kept the pressure on and eventually built their lead to double digits at 19-9. PC would mount a rally, but the cushion Asheville built up early was enough to outlast the comeback attempt, 25-17.
Set 2 – Presbyterian bounced back in the second. The Blue Hose grew their lead to four points at 15-11 and then again 21-17, forcing Asheville to burn both of its timeouts. The second timeout by the Bulldogs did the trick, and they were able to tie the score, 24-24. However, Presbyterian picked up back-to-back points to even the match at a set apiece, 26-24.
Set 3 – Asheville and Presbyterian played the most competitive set of the match. The score was tied at 10 different points, with the last occurring at 11-11. The Bulldogs and Blue Hose continued to jostle for the lead. Finally, Asheville grew its lead out to four, but PC cut its lead down to one, 23-22. Asheville persevered, though to notch back-to-back points to finish off the fourth, 25-22.
Set 4 – The fourth set proved nearly just as competitive with nine tied scores. After a kill by Spicer made it 17-17, Presbyterian rattled off a 5-0 run to gain control. Asheville cut the PC lead down to two, but a Bulldog service error gave the fourth frame to PC, 25-22.
Set 5 – Playing in its first fifth set of the season, Asheville came out playing well. The Bulldogs scored eight of the first 10 points to put the pressure on the Blue Hose. PC rebounded with a 5-0 run to get the deficit down to one, 8-7. After the run by Presbyterian, the Bulldogs scored seven of the last nine points to seal their fourth straight victory, 15-9.
Note from Coach – "I am proud of the way our team reacted tonight to an opponent who was risking everything and playing hard," said Head Coach Frederico Santos. "We were able to maintain our composure and played with a lot of heart in the end to come up with great result. Our players deserved this victory for their fighting spirit and resiliency."
Next Up – After four straight road matches, the Bulldogs will return home next Thursday and Friday as they welcome Radford to the Justice Center for a pair of matches. The two matches between the Bulldogs and Highlanders are set to begin at 4 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, respectively.
