Bulldogs Battle but Fall at Charleston Southern in Five Sets
03.08.2021 | Women's Volleyball
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team battled hard but ultimately fell at Charleston Southern in five sets (25-18, 23-25, 25-16, 23-25, 15-9) Monday evening in Big South action. The loss snaps a four-match winning streak for Asheville and moves its record to 4-5 this season.
Stat Standouts – Asheville had a few standout statistical outings Monday evening. Five different Bulldogs picked up six kills or more, including Molly Hackett, who finished with a team-high 10 kills. Setting up Asheville's offense was Grace Volk, as she closed the night with 36 assists. Volk also added four aces and seven digs. Asheville's highlight as a team was its play upfront as it finished with a season-high 14 total blocks. The tandem of Lexy Cole and Cecilia Stack led this charge as both players had a factor in six blocks apiece in the contest.
Set 1 – Monday's match opened without a ton of separation between the Bulldogs and Buccaneers. Peyton McClinton and Hannah Spicer each had three kills to pace the Bulldog offense. The set's turning point seemed to occur after a CSU attack error cut its lead down to 18-17. Following that error, Charleston Southern scored seven of the next eight points to finish off the frame, 25-18.
Set 2 – As the second set began, the Bulldogs did a great job putting a stop to a couple of mini runs by the Buccaneers. Charleston Southern extended its lead to three or four points, but the Bulldogs battled back to tie the score each time. The most significant Bulldog turnaround happened when Asheville turned a 14-10 deficit into a 7-0 run to pressure the home squad. Asheville got it to set point after Volk picked up an ace to make the score, 24-20. However, Charleston Southern would score three straight to force an Asheville timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Hackett picked up a kill to give the second set to the Bulldogs, 25-23.
Set 3 – The third set proved to be the most lopsided of the match. Charleston Southern put together a complete effort with 12 kills on 27 attacks to go along with four aces and three blocks. With so many factors working well, the Buccaneers went on to win the third, 25-16.
Set 4 – There was no shortage of offense in the fourth set. The two teams combined for 29 kills, which led to another set going right down to the wire. A Charleston Southern kill and block knotted the score at 23. However, Spicer came through with a kill to give Asheville the lead and then added an ace in the next point to force a fifth set, 25-23.
Set 5 – As well as the Buccaneers played offensively in the fourth, they did that much better in the fifth. Charleston Southern totaled 13 kills and attacked at a .333 percent clip to power past the Bulldogs, 15-9.
Note from Coach – "It was a tough match," said Head Coach Frederico Santos. "Wasn't the result we wanted, but we will go at it again tomorrow and see if we can get a positive result."
Next Up – Asheville and Charleston Southern will meet again on Tuesday. Tuesday's match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
