Charleston Southern Moves Past Asheville in Three

03.09.2021 | Women's Volleyball

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team dropped a three-set match (25-13, 25-16, 28-26) on the road at Charleston Southern Tuesday afternoon. The loss pushes Asheville's record to 4-6 on the spring season.

Stat Standouts – The duo of Hannah Spicer and Peyton McClinton led the Bulldog offense with six kills apiece. Grace Volk picked up five kills herself and dished out 22 assists on Tuesday. Defensively, Kasey West paced the Bulldogs with 15 digs and provided a boost offensively with three aces.

1st Set –
Possibly riding the momentum of last night's victory, Charleston Southern came out ready to play Tuesday. The Buccaneer offense was extremely efficient in the opening stanza turning in 16 kills on 28 attacks with just two errors. With the Charleston Southern offense clicking so well, the Bulldogs struggled to keep up and eventually dropped the frame, 25-13.

2nd Set –
The second set started well for Asheville as it scored the first three points. However, Charleston Southern promptly put together a run of its own. CSU would score the next seven points to force the Bulldogs to play catch up again. Charleston Southern would grow its lead to six at 21-15, which forced Asheville to take a timeout. The Bulldogs picked up a block on the next point to make the score 21-16, but the Buccaneers scored the following four points to take the set, 25-16.

3rd Set –
The third and final frame of Tuesday's match was by far the most competitive. Charleston Southern and UNC Asheville were tied at 16 different points in what proved to be the final set. Following a kill, Charleston Southern had set point at 24-20. Asheville was not done battling, though, as it scored the next five points to put pressure back on the home team. The Buccaneers, however, scored four of the following five points to outlast the Bulldogs in an exciting finish, 28-26.

Note from Coach –
We could not get our offense going today and had a hard time recovering from deficits during the match," said Head Coach Frederico Santos. "Now, we look forward to Radford and another opportunity for us."

Next Up -
The Bulldogs will return home to host Radford in back-to-back matches on Thursday and Friday. Thursday's contest is scheduled for a 4 p.m. first serve, while Friday's is set to begin at 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
