Men’s basketball drops road game at UT Martin
12.14.2021 | Men's Basketball
MARTIN, Tenn. – The UNC Asheville men's basketball team traveled to Martin, Tennessee, on Tuesday night, falling to the Skyhawks 79-68.
Four Bulldogs reached double-figure scoring totals, led by Quay Kimble's 20 points on 5-of-8 shooting while going 4-for-6 from 3-point range. Despite holding the Skyhawks to 31.3 percent shooting from 3-point range, UT Martin was able to shoot 53.2 percent from the floor, getting 30 points from KJ Simon. Trent Stephney matched his season high with 11 points, while Drew Pember registered five blocks for the second straight game.
"Obviously disappointed in the result tonight. We needed a much better effort to come in here and win on the road in Martin," said UNC Asheville Head Coach Mike Morrell of the win. "Give them a lot of credit, they were the hungrier team. By the time we got aggressive, it was far too late."
Standout Stats
With the loss, Asheville falls to 6-5 while UT Martin moves to 4-7. The Bulldogs will return home Saturday, hosting ETSU at 2:00 p.m.
How it Happened
Asheville got buckets from four different Bulldogs to start the game, but the Skyhawks went on a run to take a 12-point lead at the midway point of the half. The Bulldogs responded in a loud way, embarking on a 17-4 run to take a 34-33 lead with just under six minutes to play in the first. UT Martin closed the half strong, holding a 43-34 lead after 20 minutes.
Kimble continued his strong shooting in the second, but UT Martin kept the momentum going, pushing the lead to 15 before a power outage occurred at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. When play resumed, Asheville tried to climb back, as Trent Stephney got to the rim twice and Tajion Jones knocked down a three to cut the lead to nine, but that was as close as the Bulldogs would get, ultimately falling 79-68.
